The announcement of the new MacBook Pro last week didn't come as a shock considering they have been planning it forever. I purchased the new Powerbook on October 19, 2005 and was so happy since I had waited to get one for a long time. Now this new Powerbook is 4x faster?!? That pisses me off. I just called Mac and after waiting a long time to talk to a representative, they tell me I should call a retail store instead because they don't really know the answer to whether or not I can upgrade somehow. I would be willing to pay a couple of hundred dollars for restock or something considering my Powerbook is brand new. So, I call the local retail store and explain my situation, only to hear disappointing news. There is nothing they can do to help me out. Now that blows. I guess I will have to stick with my now outdated Powerbook while people start showing off their new ones in February. Anyone else get a Powerbook recently, only to have new ones released for the same price but with cooler stuff later on? Sucks.

Yeah, same here. You weren't interested in trying to upgrade it to the new ones that they just released?

Dude, your PB is almost 3 months old. It's in no way new.

Second, in response to your question - a close friend of mine bought an iBook the week before the new iBooks came out with the scroll ability on the touchpad (despite assurances from the Apple store geeks that there would never be that functionality on an iBook). When the new iBook came out, the Manager at the Apple store was willing to take back her iBook so long as she had the original box. It appears that it depends on a) the manager and her/his temperament and b) the length of time that has expired since you bought the computer.

Yeah I know. It has a bunch of stuff like that power cord that is magnetic or whatever to prevent the cord being yanked out in case you trip over it or something. It also has that camera built into it. 4x faster is what makes me the most mad. I wish they would let me pay a restocking fee or something so that I could upgrade. Bastards.

Alright, not brand new I guess but pretty damn close considering I am still under their 90-day warranty deal.

I still have the box and everything. They didn't tell me how many days it takes before they stop taking stuff back.

Seriously. Are you new to Apple's release pattern? MacWorld, Twice a year. Sometimes bumps at the WWDC. It's been this way since Jobs came back iirc.

Usually they will take things back / return the difference if it's with in 30 days. (Or what ever the initial use period is).

You bought yours in OCTOBER. It is now JANUARY. Do you want them to retroactively go back to September, how about August?

Sell it on ebay. Macs hold their retail value rather well.

Like I said, I am still under their 90-day warranty so I figured it was worth a decent shot.

being the mac fan that I am good thing I didn't buy a powerbook in september like I was planning too. If you can exchange it, i wouldn't.... Sell it on ebay and wait till april when apple turns 30. Something tells me there are gonna be some great updates and new lines of macbookpro's by then. The macbook pro still lacks a dual-layer dvd burner and a report on battery life. I was really disappointed by this and the fact that it has only 2 usb 2.0 ports. I guess you can't get all that you want. By the spring i am sure they will have dual-layer burners and an updated processor speed of 2ghz or more.

yea the 2 usb ports kind of sucks. i can have my external hd hooked up and my ipod charging but i cant connect an external mouse if i wanted to. not that big of a deal because i am on the couch most of hte time when i use it but it would be nice to have more usb ports.

Definately )

Anyways, by the time i will actually need a macbookpro it will be spring or summer of 2007. That's still a little over a year and i bet by then they will undergo some design changes and what not) It would be nice to see a dual layer dvd burner in them soon though. I wonder if apple has anything cooked up for its 30th anniversary on April 1.

I will start college fall of 2007 ) When does apple usually update its computer lines? I Know January and june i think?

tracemhunter

yes they do usually update popular items before the school shopping season begins. they offer great discounts (free printers, ipod minis, etc) along with the education discount at that time.

I have to agree with Darkscout.

1. your 4 month old iBook isn't brand new, it's 4 months old, unless you never took it out of the box.

2. Speaking as someone who sold 5 iBooks on ebay last year, and am expecting 3 more in the next month, he's right about Macs holding their value. I got well over 900 dollars for all three Ibooks that I sold in december, 997 for one of them with shipping. Sell your powerbook now and save the cash for the new systems...
