Torrent or USENET?

So i always use torrents and get about 120kb/s realtime dl on my wireless networked computer and sometimes 350kb/s on my downstairs computer through private trackers. I have sometimes though had torrents go 10kb/s

How are usenet speeds?

theysayjump

03-01-2006 01:04:26

I can't stand Torrents, far too slow.

I started using Usenet nearly 2 months ago and I love it. My max speed is about 400KBps, there is a lot of what I want and I've only been unhappy with a few of my downloads not working properly, not being able to be repaired with QuickPAR.

9/10 for Usenet for me.

newsgroups. I hate having the files broken up into a million pieces though...

03-01-2006 09:47:29

newsgroups are nice. if you have problems with files being broken up into millions of peices you aren't doing it correctly.

look into newzbin.com and make sure you are using a good news reader like newsLeecher or any other news reader that can read the .nzburl==http://=http:///url files that newzbin.com puts out.

I'm no Usenet genius, but someone asked me about how to go about using/setting up Usenet, so I'll explain from my point of view, although Allen626 made a good thread/guide about it that got me started.

I didn't know anything about Usenet at all until I stumbled upon Allen626's thread. So I found a guide and just read about it all night. I understand most of it now, but this one really helped explain it for dummies or beginners

http//slyck.com/ng.php

You'll need a Newsreader. I initially chose NewsRover (30 day free trial, walks you through setting it up, free search) and then after the 30 days were up, I switched to NewsLeecher (free, user friendly, looks good although the search function is disabled unless you pay for the software).

You'll also need a Usenet Provider. I think the 3 main ones are

UsenetServer.com (3 day free trial, $15 per month unlimited)
Newshosting.com (no free trial, $15 per month unlimited)
GigaNews.com (3 day free trial, $25 per month unlimited)

I've tried all of them, and although I prefer GigaNews it is a bit expensive.

When you've chosen your Usenet Provider, you'll need something to get and use NZB files. I use NewzBin.com. It's about $2 per month and you can search and find anything (or at least a lot) of movies, music, apps, games and of course porn. I haven't tried the one that Kidd posted above so I don't know how good that is.

When you use NewzBin.com, you click on the thing you want to download, it wil take you to a page with a lot of writing and categories. You need to click on "Get Message ID's" which will then open up your newsreader and begin downloading the files that you selected.

You will definitely want to download a program called QuickPAR. When you have finished downloading all the parts to your download, click on any of the PAR files and it will scan all the files you downloaded and check to see if any need repaired. If they do, then it will repair them automatically. Most of the time you will download RAR files and all you do is when it's downloaded, open the RAR file, and extract all the files inside there to somewhere else on your desktop.

Some you may need to burn or mount the images before using them, and some you can use straight from the RAR file.

There's probably a lot that I've missed, but that's the basic process that I use, so it works for me.

[quote6f161627a2="Wolfeman"]Your ISP should have newsgroups...[/quote6f161627a2]

I have SBC DSL and they have there own usenet, but it sux. It does not have any binary newsgroups. Binary newsgroups are the places that host files that are big, like movies. Usenet has been around forever and did not at first become a big file trading hub like it is today, it was and still is used as a msg board on many groups.

You have to DL a usenet client, like TSJ said newsleecher is the best at least IMO. You can then subscribe to gruops and download the headers which take FOREVER (2 hours + on my 300kB/s connection) and sort through the info manually to find what you want. The problem with this is there is a lot of newsgroups you have to subscribe to to use all that usenet has to offer. So a revolutionary file type came out called NZB which allowed you only to DL files you wanted and not the whole headers for every newsgroup. www.newzbin.com charges a 2$ a month fee which allows them enough bandwidth to supply you with these files. You can search through the stuff on there and just dl the NZB for the post you want and DL it. No hassle.

So basically if you want to use usenet you are going to have to pay around 16-17$ a month. If you do not DL that much to warrant that just stick with torrents as they are the second best option.

personally, I love usenet for me, it boiled down to this

Pros
- Fast
-Somehow, it gets around my DSL traffic counter, so the Bandwidth is free

Cons
-Smaller variety of files sometimes... especially with newshosting, I find that you can only download files 30 days old, after that, the files are inacessable. With torrents, you can always hope for 1 or 2 seeders on even rare files.
-Price, of course

Overall, I still find myself using Torrents occasionally for hard-to-find- things, but the other 90% is usenet.

I can get a little bit more than a gigabyte an hour... and i get full speed right away, so I dont have to wait for the download to slooowly speed up.

You pretty much summed it up. Another con is usenet takes a a little longer to get TV shows. They are up on EZTV and my super awesome private group well before Usenet. Usenet I get 1MB/s downloads so for movies and junk, its unbeatable...

Personally, I think both of them suck..

Torrents too damn slow, a lot of the time the torrents never work and its a huge pain in the ass subscribing to these 'private trackers'

USENET the speed is great, however theres not enough content and some are missing files

The Solution? Use the DC network and find yourself a good hub.

Oh shit, ya it is KB, sorry. So if I pay for those servers, I get better download speed?

iamzim

07-06-2006 09:22:15

ultimately it depends on your connection speed. I get between 4-5mbps, which goes anywhere between 400KB/s and 600KB/s and i've got as high as 1MB/s as wolfman stated. So....yeah, it does tend to be a bit faster, again, depending on the speed of your connection! my connection is stated at 6mbps (most days it's slower 4mbps rarely it's very fast 8mbps)

for those that don't know...MB is megabytes Mb is megabits
8Mb = 1MB

5Mb = 5,000,000bits = 5,000kilobits li (1byte/8bits) = 625KiloBytes

Wolfeman

07-06-2006 10:31:26

iamzim thanks for explaing that because people never get it with the Mb, MB, KB/s thing. I get right around 900KB/s to 1MB/s on usenet server. On my free Cox newsgroup I get like 200KB/s and they don't have everything and they are a lot slower to get it. $15/month and have downloaded 160GB in the past 3-4 months (just off usenet). Not a bad price...
