Does anyone know anything about WEP cracking?

You see, I work for a grocery store third shift and after receiving my PSP (from get5friends on CHRISTMAS EVE!), I scanned the area for a signal during lunch and sure enough, they have a wireless network. I picked up a 97% signal strength. So, I have access to one of the computers in the back (Windows operated) and if someone just knew where most people kept network/WEP related info or where it may be by default, I could easily find it on that computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lol that's awesome. Good luck on that. D
That'd be pretty sweet to just mess around online there when you're bored.

impossible to crack a WEP password unless you're a hacker.
you aren't, so don't try it. you won't get anywhere
also. people. remember to protect your wireless networks.
someone down my street just set their router up without configuring it.. i knew how to use the router (i have one like it) so i got on their network (which is easy without configuring the router) and was able to get on one of their unprotected PCs that had the WHOLE C drive available. All I did was put a warning message on his computer.. to protect his network.
WEP's are pretty hard to get by.
My key is REALLY hard to guess and even then, I don't broadcast.
Good luck, though.

no.. it was someone i dont' even know down my street
me and my friend were wardriving, then we decided to "hack" a connection named 'linksys'. Any open connection named 'linksys' is unconfigured.
Anyway, so i logged onto his router and changed the network name to HACK_ME

A reverse hexidecimal key configuration would be rather useful.
KisMAC hasn't worked for me when I tried it, but has that feature.

WEP is actually not that hard to crack (especially on older hardware), and it's done by sniffing data packets with progs like airsnort or netstumbler, not guessing keys. When I had mine going (I had to use WEP since that's all my USB adaptor had), I also used MAC filtering (which can also be hacked with spoofing but is much harder).
I got a new card and now use WPA, which is more secure.

WEP isn't all that hard to break, if you have a lot of time or they send a ton of information. There are programs that can sniff out the key if given enough packets but they need a lot of them especially if its 128-bit. I use WPA which is a lot harder to break.
One thing you should always know is that nothing is unhackable but you can make it a lot harder.

I don't know what to say... well, this IS the internet and if I was trying to crack someone elses WEP, why the hell wouldn't I just say it? What am I gonna lose? I really do work at a grocery store third shift (Kroger Mid Atlantic 029 00408... I even tried generating keys from a site using different combinations of these numbers and phrases, but nothing worked). Perhaps, proof could be that most of my posts are posted after roughly 4oo pm. Obviously I sleep late having a third shift job so that would explain the late posts. As a matter of fact, I searched files and folders on the computer in the back (amatuer aproach, I know) for nw keys and found several pages of useless info that I printed off to take home and further investigate... to no avail. They read 'NetWareli ANS Command Line Parmeters and Keywords.' I thought for sure I was onto something, but I don't think it has anything to do with the WEP key... I figured someone had to have created a file with the key on the computer for safe keeping incase they forgot such a difficult number, but I couldn't find anything. So, I had another idea. Reboot the inventory gun... whenever I have to do that, a lot of text and numbers scrolls down the screen and obviously the gun has to somehow sign in to the network. Though I saw no WEP key (stupid idea really), I did find the IP address, subnet masking something or another and another address I forget... all of which I could manually type into the configuration on the PSP (if that makes any sense), but I was missing the primary and secondary something or another (you can tell I know a shit load about computers...), not that any of this would have mattered without the WEP key. I figure I'd better just give up. I'm wasting precious lunch time that could be spent playing Grand Theft Auto or watching The Chappelle Show... thanks anyway everyone.

Is the computer you're using in back connected to the wireless network?
mistertomlinson

Yes, it is connected to the network... does that mean you could tell me how to find the key?! o
If you're having so much trouble, maybe you should ask yourself if it's really worth going online during your break.

Type in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Enter "admin" for the password for the prompt that comes up. If it's a linksys, then it'll be set up like this. Click wireless, then wireless security, and there you go. There's the key. If admin doesn't work for the password, try "default", or google the default passwords for the router manufactorer. This will only work, of course, if they haven't changed the default password.

You're not going to find the WEP key on the computer. You can only find it at once place, the bottom of the router.
Just like a CC number. If you enter a cc number on the web, or buy something with it at the store, its not going to keep a record of your CC number for you to see. It might give you the last 4 digits but thats all. Think about it, why would you need your CC number recorded on the websites database for you to see, or if you used it at a store, why would the full CC number be on the reciept. There's absolutely no reason at all for that. They know that someone could easily dig the reciept out of the trash and get their number, or if it has to do with a purchase online, someone could get on the person's computer and open up the browser to their account to find their CC number.
You are not going to find the WEP key on that computer. You are wasting your bloody time. The only place you will find it is on the back of the router.

What the hell are you talking about? If you can access the router through the web interface you can find it. Other than that you aren't going to get it. I have never heard of it being written on the bottom of the router unless whoever setup the wireless decided to write it there...

Depends on the router brand. 2WIRE ships theirs with a wep key out of the box, and it is indeed printed on the bottom of the router.
[quote6394470cc8="bigDeeOT1"]You're not going to find the WEP key on the computer. [/quote6394470cc8]
If the wireless network was configured using XPSP2's wireless wizard you can retrieve the current key easily - open the 'view wireless networks' dialog, click "setup a wireless network for a home or small office", click next, select "set up a new wireless network", click next, enter anything in the ssid field, select "manually assign a network key", click next, uncheck "hide characters as i type". The last used key is right there in plain text. And like its been said several times, you can also generally retrieve the key from the router's web interface.

OK, I tried the ip address thing... typing it in to the address bar, but I can't even browse the web from that computer without a username and password... grocery nazis... as for a router, there is none. I see several phone jack looking chords running into a small old looking box on the wall and I have a feeling that is not the router but is connected to the router which is located elsewhere (perhaps in a manager's office or something), but I'm going to inspect this box and office for a router... I am also going to try setting up a new wireless network tonight. While I was snooping around on the computer I did come across a configuration (if you will) of the network listing several computers that were assigned to it, so it seems that I am on the right track and may be able to add a new computer (PSP). Her's hoping. If this does not work, fuck it, I'm through. Thanks everyone for all of your help.
