I just got my scores for the new SATs back. Wondering what everyone else got. I got 1900 even (the first time I took it I got 1720; maybe next time I can get 2080).

tracemhunter

20-12-2005 10:17:02

i only took it once and sucked. got a 1490 lol. but transferring is a lot easier than going straight out of high school. saves money too )

tylerc

20-12-2005 10:17:15

On the PSAT I took in October I got 1660.

Nothing great, but it's the PSAT and I was still in the 74th percentile overall.

I take the real SATs January 28th.

Yeah, I'll be transferring too because of the money issue. That's 1490 on the new SATs, right?

The PSATs are scored in terms of hundreds, not thousands. I got 182 on the PSATs. You probably got 166, since the conversion is just adding a zero at the end of your score.

Good luck dude.

tylerc

20-12-2005 10:23:14

I know, I got 166, I just added the zero.

I'd assume it's the new SATs, since he just turned 18.

Thanks.

Yeah, plus a 1490 would be incredible on the old SATs.

Then again, I've taken the SATs twice already and I'm fifteen.

EDIT trace got his post in before mine.

tylerc

Understandable, and unless you're planning on going to some private university that's really selective, SATs won't matter that much, assuming your grades are decent.

A new test that has the same weight as the SATs is the ACT, which incorporates science.

So if you're a science person, you can get a much better score on the ACT.

tylerc

Yeah, I know, I'm going to take the ACT in the spring.

My guidance counselor told me 1800 is a pretty average score on the PSATs.

That's how it translates mathematically, but the new one is more difficult. A 2050 on the new SAT is worth more than a 1370 on the old ones.

I got a 1220(/1600) on the SAT. I only took the test once, didn't take SAT prep, and got an 1100 on the PSAT. My GPA in HS wasn't spectactular, but was well above average...and I lettered in 3 varsity sports. I got into all my choice schools except University of Miami...which shortly after mailing in my application I decided I didn't want to attend. Now, my cumulative GPA is 3.8 going into the spring semester of my junior year (this does NOT factor in the 3.5 from this fall). It seems as though everyone here is pretty bright on paper...wonder why everyone sounds like an illiterate numbskull in their posts? ;)

when i took the new one last year, i got like a 1940. but i got like a 710 on just my math, so that put me in the 95th percentile. If that dosn't earn me some extra points tryin to get into a college, i don't know what will.

SAT isn't that great of a test as far as telling exactly how smart you are. All it does is show ABOUT what range u are compared to other people. u could get better scores that people smarter than u, or u could get a worse score than people who are dumber than u. it all depends on 1) how smart u are 2) how good u are at taking tests and 3) how lucky u are when u'r gessing lol

Indeed, but unfortunately many colleges are dependant on it.

I studied hundreds of pages and took like three practice tests the first time and improved my score by only a few dozen points. I took it the second time and got way better without any studying or practice tests.
Go figure.

Kidd

20-12-2005 18:22:04

the first time is so-so the second time ur supposed to improve alot. now u cant hide any sat scores so colleges will look at any sat's u take.

[b5ef42b18ca]Not true.[/b5ef42b18ca] Colleges only look at the top score of each section (math, writing, reading) you take. So in theory if these were the scores you got on three SAT tests

#1
Math 100
Reading 800
Writing 200

#2
Math 800
Reading 200
Writing 100

#3
Math 0
Reading 0
Writing 800

It would look like you got a perfect score. I was considering doing this, but it would have cost too much.

Jacotto

20-12-2005 20:57:31

First of all, you can't get zeroes.

second of all, standardized tests are retarded. It's a useless life skill.

Oh, and they gave me a 2350. The bastards.

Which is why I'm off to Minnymouse/St. Poop next year for school.

Not entirely true. In harvards 2005 class 70% of those with a perfect sat score were rejected.

a) I doubt that statistic - Harvard is VERY numbers oriented for Grad admissions, I doubt it would be any different for undergrad. Further, I can't imagine the class of 2005 stats are out yet.

b) how many perfect scores were there in the US? When I took the SAT there were somewhere around 100 perfect scores. If Harvard rejected 70 of those 100 kids, (when normally they try to admit 40% more than their intended class size) where did those other kids go?

tracemhunter

20-12-2005 22:16:55

If you score a perfect score, or anywhere close on the SAT, you're getting scholarship offers from every University and College in the country - and you get to shop them against each other.

Moreover, whatever the perceived snootiness of Harvard is, it sure doesn't compare to the weight of the Harvard name on your resume.

Its not all about the SATs, grades usually are ranked higher on admissions lists.

oh sweet...all the teachers make the sats seem like the most important 4 hours of your life

lol well it sorta is. If HS grades are #1 then SATs are a close #2.

It also matters what HS you go to. My HS was insanely tough so a 3.5 is like a 3.8-4.0 at a normal school.

is that gpa weighted or unweighted. i heard that for every like honors class or things like that, they add like a .2 to ur gpa. is this true? i have a 3.5 gpa right now, but i take like four different honors or advanced classes, so does that make my gpa go up? just wondering if anyone know's anything about this, and what it all means.

Unweighted. What I'm trying to say is that my high school is really well known for being tough and having a lot of smart kids. So getting a 3.5 is like getting a 3.8 at an avg. school. My high school was harder than most of my college classes...

k, but can u still explain that whole unweighted/weighted thing? does that mean i have a gpa of 4.3??? i didn't think that was possible....

Yeah some kids at my school had a 4.7 or something. I don't remember exactly how it works but honors and AP classes count as more...

To tell you the truth, I really have no idea. It was like four years ago.

My high school is also tough.

I know a lot of freshman in college right now who said that Homestead (my high school) prepare you incredibly well; in classes most people are struggling in, they are breezing through.
