I am going to Breckenridge and Vail from January 3rd til the 10th and am looking for some equipment for the trip.

I decided to purchase some equipment because rental is $25 a day.

My cousin has a pair of K2 skis he is taking for me to use, but I need some boots.

For those that ski, should I scoop some decent ones up off of ebay or do I really need to buy them from somewhere where I can try them on?

Any boots you recommend?

thanks!

Finally an off-topic thread of interest to me.

I've read that
http//www.untracked.com/
http//www.proctorjones.com/pjonline/default.asp
http//www.skicentral.com/
http//www.geardirect.com/store.cfm/store_id/1
http//www.altrec.com/outdoors/ski/
http//www.steepandcheap.com/ (woot for outdoor deals)

are good places to start. There's another link I'm looking for now that has great deals on demo and used equipment. I'll post when I find it.

There's not many on ebay at the moment, but Salomon Ellipse 9.0 boots (great boots).. they had a bunch a few weeks ago on there.

thanks doylnea and sweedfish, +karma

do you two think its ok to buy off ebay, even though i obviously won't be able to try them on beforehand?

do ski boots generally run higher or lower? or if I am a size 11 in most shoes, I should be fine with ordering size 11?

I'd go to your local ski shop, hopefully you have one, and try on some ski boots ... ski boots all fit differently, most Salomon boots fit a little bigger, head fit a little smaller. Try on a pair and once you find a pair that feels good look for it on ebay, you should be able to find a pair that is cheaper. If you can't find a pair on ebay check out www.evogear.com or www.backcountry.com

You need to try boots on, they're a lot harder to fit than shoes and whatnot. As for skis, not sure, you should be ok, but demo some first and read reviews.

I love snowboarding, I go up almost every weekend and sometimes Thursdays. You definitely need to try some boots on, and don't worry about spending a bit extra (You don't want to be cold, It sucks)

lol I have a season pass to vail beaver creek keystone breckenridge and Abasin I'm going tomorrow and all next 2 months

k2's are awesome skis but their a bit expensive it depends on how often you go and there are different skis for different types of skiing like do you do moguls or do you just kick it or are you into jumps also the bindings are almost more important then the skis ( I reccomend atomic 412's if you can find them as they are adjustable so you can lengthen your skis for speed or shorten them for moguls)

and for your boots you want a tight fit and I highly highly highly reccomend getting the soles that they mold to your feet your body will thank you at the end of the day

I fucking love CO the mountains are the reason I live here

I agree with popo, if you're going to purchase skis then you really need to evaluate how you ski.

I snowboard a LOT and addicted. I actually learned at Beaver Creak CO, my friend took me up and pushed me to the black diamond and said if you dont learn now you'll die. So I learned real fast. hahaha.

I would recommend ski's, but my expertise is in snowboarding.

Buy a good, comfortable ski mask...a frozen face will instantly ruin your trip!! I went out there last year, luckly in april, but i've found that a ski mask is your MOST! important piece of gear!!!!

I'm looking to buy some skis.

I'm thinking that I'll go to a ski shop around here (that's very well respected) and get fit for new / demo boots.

However to save some money, I've been looking into picking up a pair of used skis and bindings from anyone of the sources I linked in my prior post and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I've skied on 165cm (I think) skis in the past and done pretty well. I'm 6' tall and weigh 170lbs and am a Type II skier, with middling ski skills. Does 165cm seem about right for some of my size? Is there a huge difference between 165cm and 170cm in terms of controllability?

I'd like to keep the skis and bindings under $150 at most and closer to $100 unless going up to say $175 would get me remarkably better skis and bindings.

So anyone want to help me out?

i dont ski, i snowboard, so i dunno how much i could help...

but all sizes are different... boots are the most important part... its ur comfort
make sure they fit.. if u find a pair online, go try a pair on and see if they will fit.

I'm 6"1 175 type 3 skier. I use 185cm's .. You might think about going up to 175-177's. I prefer longer ski's ... for used ski's you might look into Salomon Scream 8 or 10 on Ebay, they are going very cheap for both new and used ski's.

Pretty good deal here http//cgi.ebay.com/Mens-Salomon-X-Scream-Skis-179-length_W0QQitemZ8739786799QQcategoryZ21246QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've been looking at these - both on ebay and on their website

How do the older skis compare to the newer ones in terms of technology? Am I going to find it harder to ski on something from 2001 versus a 2004/2005 model?

Thanks for your help.

as long as there parabolic and that you haven't gone every day of the season for the lasr couple years then no you will be fine however you will find that in the next couple years your skis won't compare where as if you were to go with a new set you'd be fine for the next 3-4 years

I think I skied less than 10 times last year. I'm still learning to ski, so I plan to upgrade my equipment in a couple of years anyway. Thanks for the help. I think I'll take a chance on these skis.
