So, im planning on buying a brand new computer. The only problem I have is that I dont know what brand will be better. What are your guys experiences with HP, Gateway, Dell etc. I saw a thread about emachines, and from reading, I heard they suck. Any opinions please, thanks

Dude, get a Dell.

I just picked up a $1,823 Inspiron 700m for $1,082.71 shipped after various coupons/promotions ($982.71 after $100 MIR). Currently bothering Dell for an additional 3% off since I payed with my DPA. I'd say the girlfriend is getting a very nice xmas gift )

If he's gaming...I'm real tired of people paying big money for gaming systems, only to use them for casual browsing and schoolwork. Worst thing Getting a Dell XPS with shitty specs and paying just as much as (or more than) you would have for a pimped Inspiron (

if you want an affordable internet computer go with a low end hp, if you want an affordable internet laptop go with a low end gateway.

This is advice from a tech that works with ALL brands of computers on a daily basis. If you must stray away from my advice at least listen to this

Never... NEVER... NEVER!!! Under any circumstance, No matter how good the deal, buy an emachine or a dell. They might have the same specs but the parts are made of pure garbage.

Well, I've had my Inspiron 5150 for 3 years running, and the only problems I've had were self-inflicted to take advantage of next-day warranty service ( twisted ). Everything, I mean EVERYTHING, on this laptop has been upgraded from when I purchased it, and none of it cost me a cent (I actually purchased a 5100, and ended up getting the 3.0GHZ P4 I5150 [refurbie] under warranty service to replace it). While hardware problems might be more common in Dells than some other popular manufacturers...the support/warranty service makes up for it (even if they do give you the run-around, in the end they'll do whatever you want).

Don't you think your opinion might be a bit biased? You only work on computers that DON'T work, so the ratio of all the other dells that are working fine you never see. Now, I haven't owned a proprietary machine in years (built my own), but I find it hard to believe that dells are that shitty. From the raving reviews I've heard from fellow peers, it wouldn't seem that there's that big of a deal with quality control and hardware equipment. I mean, if that's not the problem then it's user error. Which is probably a lot of what you fix.

I've had nothing but issues with my old Dell. Once your warranty runs out it seems everything goes wrong......O well.
I picked up a nice CompaQ Presario 2200,Intel Celeron M proccessor.....512mg DDR Ram,40gb hd,cd-rw/dvd combo,wireless connection card.....

Only ended up running about $1200. Its fast as shit.....A hell of alot faster than my old Dell with 1gb ram....lol

my brothers dell was a piece of shit but someone broke into his place and stole it. the thing would squeak everytime you pick it up. if that means quality then my concept of quality must be really messed up. also, dell has been using crappier parts to keep the numbers up. by numbers i mean profits.

and if you go with an alienware, you will need a couple more batteries because they have like the worst battery life (~45mins).

if i were on a budget i would probably go with toshiba or the gateway. i have never known anybody to have bad experiences with gateway. i can't say that about hp and emachines. when i look at an emachine i just get the feeling like i have been raped by a clown in a trailer home.

I've had my Dell since Christmas of 8th grade and it's worked fine.

But, I have upgraded it.

My aunt had/has a Gateway, she got it in 2001.
Almost as bad as my Dell.....thats the problem with big companies that sell computers for "reasonable" prices, all they do to make it a bigger profit is use complete shit for parts, thus you should build one yourself or have someone build you one. Hell if you build it yourself you can make a kickass computer that would cost like $2000 at Dell/Gateway fo about $800.

/me is tired of claiming that "big companies" always sell shit...they are big for a reason, and thats because they are good at what they do. Nobody would buy Dell/Gateway if they were that shitty...and I can assure you that the consumer reviews out there weren't written by retards; these people know what they're talking about. Everyone has a preference...and for a home/small office computer, I choose Dell.

Well im planning so spend (well my dad) about 1,000-1,200. Im not really a gamer, so I will just use my computer for music, and I would like to record from my tv so I can put it in my psp or Ipod. And also photoshop. Im not sure which one im going to get.

I dont know much about how to put a computer together, any guide? Im thinking it will help save some money and make a better computer.

There is 6 sites to tell you how to build your own computer...even if you don't do it, tis very useful information if you fuck something up or get new hardware.

Dell has deals sometimes where you can get a decent setup for $300-$400 so I would try that since you don't need some high performance gaming PC. Use the leftover money for a memory ypgrade (get 1GB), TV tuner card (~$50 for sdtv or ~$100 for HDTV) and good PC speakers (~$200 for Logitech Z-5500) and you should have the setup you need.

All computers are sort of hit and miss (why do you think part warranties are generally so short?), so you mind as well get a dell since they'll come fix your PC.

go w/ a powerbook, but on a serious note im thinking about getting a Dell 9300, kinda sweet looking, and when i was looking @ it you could get it for around 600 after instant savings, and rebates

Wait til Dell has another $750 off laptop deal. I got a 700m that was like 1500 for 900...

Build your own, you will get an awesome computer for the prices the big companies charge

I have owned 2 dells, and have had no major problems. Any thing that went wrong was from me fucking around. And their support is usually very, very helpful.

i am now running a custom build, (was my first.) It really is not that hard. The bitch is deciding what parts you want, and getting everything to be compatable. But i recommend buying parts from a good place like Newegg. I had to return my motherboard twice, and it was no problem with Newegg.

I concur.

When I was 18 I was a little intimidated to build my first computer but its such a great learning process, I would recommend it to anyone with the knowledge or resources (personal help or internet help) to do so.

Some of you spend $1k-1.5k on a computer and at that price you could probably build 3 similar spec computers or 1 extremely fast one.

I've built many computers in the last five years and I always leave mine on 24/7. No problems whatsoever. Except for the time my buddy crushed a processor, the only problems I have ever encountered have been with software.
