dropkick murphys are alternative and alkaline trio is rock? what are you smoking shamash?

anyways, this assignment is kind of dumb. If you listen to this music you should be able to classify it in a way that makes sense to you. The only way a classification system is going to be useful to you is if its fit to your needs. If you still need help, use very generic labels

I'd suggest using these groups and guidelines
Rock - you should know rock when you hear it. Rock encompasses everything from the beatles to black sabbath
Rap - yea, if it's not singing its rap
Pop - music with rap like beats but with singing

If it fits more than one genre, don't make new genres, just pick one.

12-12-2005 10:32:20

K, Im altering the assignmet a little. Theres only a few categories you can put each band in Pop, Punk, Rock, Hip-Hop/Rap, Electronic/Industrial, Metal/Screamo, and Psychobilly/Rockabilly

And yeah I know I should be able to classify them myself, but some are hard to decide on.

12-12-2005 10:54:51

Go to your local cd store, or even find one online, then what you do is find each cd....write down which section they are in......wala! You now know the genres.....

Has anyone even ever listen to Dropkick Murphys? They are punk rock. No ska, no alternative, punk rock.

I never try to classify my music to hard since every band can be sub categorized to death. Like screamo isn't a category I'd ever use. Those bands are either Indie or Rock. Thrice is rock. I know the band, they aren't emo...

"Indie rock" is shorthand for "independent rock," which stems from the general rule that most of its artists are signed to independent record labels, rather than major record labels. It is not strictly a genre of music (given that musical style and independence are not always correlated), but is often used as an umbrella term covering a wide range of artists and styles, connected by some degree of allegiance to the values of underground culture, and (usually) describable as rock and roll.

Genre is a bitch. I have a love hate relationship with the genre ID3 tag. I'd rather sort my music by "mood" actually.

Yeah but its become its own genre now. Bands like Radiohead ar Indie to me even though they are on a major label. They aren't really Rock and I don't want to put them as Electronica or something and get them mixed in with all my Jungle rave music -P

It kinda defeats the point though when many indie labels are owned by majors or have deals with majors to promote small artists in return for finding fresh talent.

Exactly! And now you're talking about STATUS not GENRE.

Consider the HISTORY of the term "indie". It has been in use since at least the late-1980's. Back when indie labels WERE indie labels.

Ok, this is what ive come up with so far, and half of the bands I cant decide if they are in the right genre. I think I may also split up metal and hardcore, and add sub-genres to both of those, but i dont know what that would be, hahaha.

There, I fixed it up a bit for you.

~Indie was removed and is now included with Rock/Alternative.
~Mainstream shite was added.
~Dark lyrics and atmospheric music does not make Joy Division Indistrial/Electronic.
~The Misfits are punk.
~If you are going to have Green Day in Rock/Alternative and not Punk (I know it's an argueable point), then you can't really have The Offspring in Punk.
~Guitars and a loud voice does not make a band Rock/Alternative (My Chemical Romance).

Misfits and Joy Division are in their right place. This thread makes me want to puke. Someone that listens to Thrice, Joy Division, and Misfits shouldn't have Backstreet Boys in his music.

HIM deserves its own category. Crazy Finish metal...

I rock peas on my head but don’t call me a pea head.
Beas on my head but don’t call me a bee head.
Bruce Lee’s on my head but don’t call me a Lee head.
Now please excuse me, I gots to get my tree fed.
You wear name brands and I make my own clothing.
I hang out with an apple who loves self-loathing.
“I hate myself.”

Pancake on my face makes me extra happy.
I like shampoo bottles that sit on my lappy.
Cause it’s my show you can’t tell me what to do.
When life hands me lemons I make beef stew.

So yo I gotta go, it’s time for me to rock it.
I put baloney in my left pocket.
Smear some cream cheese in my gold locket .
Cause it’s my show I’m Andy Milonakis.
It’s my show I’m Shmandy Shmila-Shmakis.
It’s my show I’m Andy Milonakis.

Andy Milonakis is a fat retarded 30-year old that needs to fade away. He isn't funny except for that first thing he did that super bowl thing and that that was funny for about 10 secs. He pretends he is 12 so people think he's funny but knowing he is 30 makes him just a sad fuck.

Anyway, the only thing I like about The Andy Milonakis Show is the randomness and surrealism of it. It's not funny but I enjoy randomness over normalcy.

Strange how this thread turned into a talk about Andy Milonakis. First off, he doesnt pretend to be 12, he has stated many times that he isnt. And yes, it is a funny show.
