What colleges would you recommend?

I'm in the college hunt right now.

I live in Indiana, and go to one of the top high schools in the state (our school gets lots of rewards for high test scores and stuff like that).

My classes are usally honors mixed with some regular, and I ran for 2 years, working on the paper for 3 (associate section editor, won a write-off contest at a national convention).

My course grades are mostly As, with a few Bs mixed in (mostly in math, with a small amount of others mixed in). My cumulative GPA is about 10 on a 12 scale (A average), and my class rank is in the top third.

I'm looking at Indiana University, University of Chicago, and Washington University in St. Louis (that one might be tough).

Can anyone make some recommendations? My parents have college saved up for, but I need to give them a good reason if I go to a private school. I plan on being an accountant or tax lawyer, if that helps.

Any advice would be appreciated.

MSU!!!

06-12-2005 19:24:57

what are your SAT / ACT scores?

Go to the best college /university you can get into. If you're looking in Chicago look at Northwestern as well. If you're staying in Indiana look at Notre Dame (if only for their alumni network).

washington st louis is very tough. purdue is a pretty good school. armstrong says msu and from what i have heard, they have better girls than umich. you should apply to more than 3 though.

Washington St Louis is has much lower admissions standards than does University of Chicago.

as much as I don't like to admit it, Nortwestern is a really good school too.

I'm an IU fan, plus IU's business school is better than Purdue's and Michigan State's, so it would make sense to go there over those.

Any other recommendations?

Edit As far as SAT/ACT scores, none yet, I'm taking the SAT in January. I did take a practice one and scored the equivalent of an 1100 (on the 1600 scale, it was for the new test and I forget what that score was) as a freshman.

I would not take advise from people on this forum, for one thing. Your guidance counselor can probably help you. I've got a few books on colleges that have proved helpful.

That said, your best bet is to visit lots of local colleges and develop a criteria as to what you want in your college. Then go to http//collegeboard.com[]http//collegeboard.com, plug them in, and get a list of colleges that meet what you want. )

I would not recommend WUSTL. Some of my professor previously worked there and they have said how much they did not like working there. The focus of the school is on grad students and the medical school since they both bring in a lot of money. Undergraduates are kind of a afterthought.

The WSJ ranks it as #1 in their Regional Schools, but it's not ranked (at least not in top 20) in their National School rankings (which is more important when saying a school is #1).
http//www.collegejournal.com/reports/bschool05/glance/20040922-topschools.html

The WSJ rankings suck anyway, they've only been at it for 4-5 years. The US news and FT rankings are more credible.
"Unlike other MBA rankings that use a variety of measures, the Journal uses only surveys and interviews with corporate recruiters."

This means that if you are 'difficult' to recruit (and most people from great schools are), your school will not score highly. Just look where Harvard is ranked.

Haha, last time I was at a college (Michigan State, we stayed at my friend's brother's apartment over at Cedar Village, for those of you that know what I'm talking about) I had a bad experience.

We went to see Stephen Lynch in Ann Arbor, then I got really smashed at his apartment back in East Lansing...like....really drunk (6 shots of 100 proof Smirnoff, 3 Jaegermeister, 3 Popov) and I only weight like 130 lbs, so I threw up like 4 times the next morning. I suppose the fact that it was one of my first times drinking didn't help either.

Figured I'd dig this up.

I'm not looking at University of Chicago, or Wash U STL anymore.

I got a 1260 on the SATs (640 verbal, 620 math) on the old scale, 1880 on the new scale (620 on writing as well). I'm taking the ACT in June, and maybe the SAT again next year.

The colleges I'm really looking at now are
-Indiana University-Bloomington
-Michgan University Ann Arbor
-University of Virginia

A bigger question is what the hell do you want your major to be?

I go to Purdue. I started off at Rose-Hulman. I'd choose IU if I had a different major.

What you want to study?

[quote1da1707760="tracemhunter"]i have heard the guy to girl ratio sucks. purdue is a good school but that could be enough to deter me from going.[/quote1da1707760]
[quote1da1707760="tracemhunter"]armstrong says msu and from what i have heard, they have better girls than umich.[/quote1da1707760]

Ah yes. Spoken like a true high schooler. Seriously. You'd choose one college over the other based on something like that. Purdue is something like 41/59. With 40k undergrads that's 16k females. When you go out to the bars you don't notice.

I went to Rose for 2 years. The ratio there is 20/80 with 2000 undergrads. I had 90 females in my freshmen class and oh heavens I still managed to find a girlfriend.

tracemhunter should be one of those guys that sues to get into an all girls college. With all the whites getting into all black and women getting into all mens, I'm sure you'd win. Then you could be all "OMG. MY RATIO IS 200001"
[quote1da1707760="cdcoit1384"]I would go with the best school you can get into...but in the end all you need is that piece of paper.[/quote1da1707760]

Seconded.

I'd add that you should go to the best INSTATE college you can get into, unless you get a full ride. Education is about the same everywhere. An employer isn't going to overlook you because you went to Michigan over Purdue. Maybe if the recruiter graduated from one or the other, but they're both good engineering programs.

However going to Michigan out of state you'll be 80k in the hole coming right out of college. That's a sizeable chunk of change.

i would suggest that u visit and apply to schools that you think are your reach schools. don't rule ones out that are expensive. i went to Cornell and initially thought i would never get in, it was too expensive, blah blah blah. i got in early decision and they gave me grants. if you are a well rounded applicant, have the grades u do, and the sats u will likely look more appealing than u think. ivy league education is nothing to sneeze at. on the flip side, wherever u go is what u make of it. check out cornell though ) i am a bit biased, though

I know that UCLA and a lot of schools out west are incredible schools, BUT, California is very expensive in general. Here are the tuition costs from CollegeBoard.com

Annual College Costs ( Fall 2005 )

Out-of-state tuition and fees $24,324
Room and board $11,928
Books and supplies $1,483
Estimated personal expenses $2,075
Transportation expense $729 (mine would be much, much more for plane tickets)

I'm sure there are other expenses too, so that's looking to be $45,000-$50,000 per year.

I'm first going to say that I haven't read the replies. However, I want to stipulate something I've found now that I am in college and I've talked with everyone else I've met here (I'm at NYU, btw; we have a great business school if that's what you interested in, as well as a CPA program) the essay counts for a lot more than anyone is telling you. They way it seemed to me here is that there are a wide range of scores (we were comparing SAT scores, only because its the easier to compare. GPA can be weighted and on different scales, so it was more difficult), going from like 1250 or so up. However, a majority of the people I met, especially those who were surprised they got in, were very proud of the essay they wrote. Obviously, I didn't read each of their essays, but the point is, basically, as long as you have some minimum grade and have at least a minimum score and some difficult classes, the only thing that they're really comparing between multiple applicants is their essay and extracurriculars. While they say that grades and SATs are most important, it seems to me that they're just a benchmark to make sure you have the intelligence to go to their school. After that, everything else is what matters.

[quote3559090e31="Gigante"]Apply to a bunch. I applied to 16.[/quote3559090e31]

are you serious?

i'm way to lazy to do that

i only applied to 2...one of them came back w/ some lame excuse about not having an "official" high school record (i'm homeschooled)...and i got into the other one.

Next fall i'm going to GCC! go me!
(oh ya, i'm also going for Mechanical Engineering)
(Grove City is in PA)
(awesome engineering program)
(under $20,000)
(why am i putting all these things in parentheses?)

Getting ahead. A lot of high schools now are implementing pre engineering classes to prepare for college.

Exactly.

That's why I'm taking Accounting, personal finance, etc., because I want to go into business.
