I was thinking about buying a digital camera for someone this Christmas but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions from the tech experts on the board? My limit is $400 so nothing too expensive. Thanks!

the canon S2 IS is probably the best superzoom as of now.
The S5200 is prettier and I like ti better but thats opinion.

the Olympus cameras usually are the bext compacts
the canon powershot series is usually a little lower but still really nice.

Damn...

Must be someone pretty special.

I don't spend more then $150 on anyone. $150 is only for my fiance. Everyone else gets about $20-$50.

What kinds of pictures do you expect the person to take, and during what activities?

For point and shoot cameras, I'd get a Nikon.

For anything else, professional looking or more advanced, I'd go for any Canon SLR.

Backwards?

Also, I've worked with many many digital cameras. I know what I like. I'm not backwards.

Well, I kind of lied. My girlfriend is really asking for one from her mom so I'm doing to research. I figured it was easier to say I was getting it than to do a lot of explaining. I'm pretty broke, by the way. D

Nothing too fancy. Just basic point and shoot activities with some decent features. She doesn't want a bare bones camera but certainly doesn't need anything professional.

So are you saying that Canon are only good for P&S and Nikon are only good for SLR's?

Trying to convince a Nikon fan that Canon (and vice versa) is better is like trying to convince a brick that it sweats, there's no point.

I am a Canon fan and my next DSLR will probably be another Canon (although Iwouldn't mind a D70), so that's who I would go for regardless of what it will be used for. Both Canon and Nikon make amazing cameras, but the reason I'd choose Canon (P&S) is because they use Compact Flash I&II memory cards. They are cheaper than most other types of memory cards and generally have faster read/write speeds, not to mention are more widely available.

Go here and just select the option to $400 price limit and Storage Type to "Compact Flash" and hit search. It's will give you a list of 10 cameras that all have very good reviews (editor and user) so they should be able to give you more information. Or at least you can search for some of the details more specifically yourself.
