HDD & CD drive non-responsive?

I just got my motherboard and video card back from Cyberpower after they failed about 3 days after I got it from Freepay.

NOW after connecting everything and putting it all back together, the HDD and the CD-Drive don't work/respond. There's no "beep" when it starts up and the light on the CD drive doesn't light up. The fans on the motherboard as well as the linksys wireless adapter all work.

I tried different IDE cables, reseating everything again, disconnecting everything and then reconnecting them, but still nothing.

All the lights inside come on but it's just the HDD and the CD drive that don't.

Have they just sent me back the same fucking montherboard or is there something I'm doing wrong, or that could be wrong?

buy a new mobo or try new cables.

I seriously think you have a bad power supply

Bad PS could be it. They sell little PS testers for cheap...

It really sucks that you got such a lemon from them. I think I dodged a bullet with mine. Good luck on getting things resolved.

If it was the power supply though wouldn't that mean that nothing at all in the computer would work?

No, not at all. PS problems can cause a lot of wierd things to happen even if the computer is running and booting...

i forgot which pins but you can stick a paper clip in your psu and "hotwire" it to see if it works alright...

Aurelius

28-11-2005 18:44:10

no i'm not effin crazy... i did it with my modstream to mamke sure everything worked right before plugging it up to my two thousand dollar rig... and now that i think about it... it wouldnt' help your situation much since all it does is make sure that the the psu doesn't f up right as it starts. but i have to agree with other people here that the psu is the most likely culprit. cyberpower probably used the psu that came stock with the case so it's most likely generic crap with crap volts. even if they're willing to replace it, i'd recommend you buy a nice psu from ocz, antec, or maybe thermaltake.

I actually tried the paperclip technique.

I pulled out the PSU connector from the motherboard and put one end of the paperclip into where a black wire was, and the other end into where a red wire was I think, then powered on the computer and it powered up, but nothing happened. It was exactly how it is at the moment, except that time, the hard drive "beeped", this time nothing happens. That's what the tech support guy told me to and that's how he "determined" it was a bad motherboard.

I really can't afford to buy any parts for this at the moment, and I really can't even afford to send something back to Cyberpower either, so I guess I'm pretty much fucked until I can get some cash.

Is it possible it could be on the wrong voltage? The switch on the back is set to 115v and it can be switched to 230v. Is it possible or would it be risky to try that?

Dont do 230, you will fry everything. Thats only used in countries such as China and Europe. The USA is defult 115.

I do have a spare modded antec 350 watt smart blue....

Yeah that's what I figured because in Scotland it's 210v.

How much does that power supply you mentioned go for?

take a power supply from a computer laying around ur house if u have one and see if that resolves the problem. u definitly dont want to put it at 230 volts that will ruin ur motherboard if it isnt already ruined.

If you want i can get it shipped to you 2nd day for free direct from Amazon.

I'm thinking you may need a adapter for your cyperpower, i remember wood having issues with changing his power supply since the connections are different. If you can take a picture of your power supply to motherboard socket and give me your motherboard model # i may be able to help you out there.

well since it was a free comp it's probably gonna be a twenty pin connector so older psu's will be fine.. if it's an nforce4 one i suggest an ocz modstream to keep the case neat and also because it has nice rails as well as very very good customer support

Thanks for your help guys.

The retards at Cyberpower.......well they are retards.

I called them and tol them that the HDD and the CD drive don't respond and the HDD doesn't even spin, but he insisted that it was my video card that was making them not work. So after removing the video card, putting it back in it still not working, he told me it was the RAM and to try taking it out and putting it back in.

I asked him to hold on but he said, just try the RAM and call us back, and then hung up. So I tried it in every available slot and it didn't work, so I tried a stick from another computer and still didn't work.

Then he says it may be either another faulty motherboard or the PSU is fucked.

I really can't be arsed going through all the hassle of sending the PSU back to those fuckers, so I guess I'll have get some cash together and buy me a new one.
