Okay, so you all know, I have paid for every CD and song I own.

What do you think about if you break, scratch to the point of not being able to play, or misplace a CD you buy? What if your protected wma files stop playing?

Would it be reasonable to obtain this music illegally, considering you've paid for them?

to me, the only thing that is illegal to download is software. i think downloading music or movies is just like recording music from the radio or movies with a dvr.

Legal? Is someone who hardly works and still makes millions of dollars while someone in the inner city works long hours doing backbreaking work for minimum wage? Is that legal? They wont die because you dont buy a new cd, so in my mind its legal

This falls under fair use which is the main principle behind file sharing (at least in theory).

When you purchase a CD or DVD, you are purchasing a license to view/listen to whatever performance it is. The medium (cd, dvd etc) is just the easiest way to view your legally licensed copy of the media. If your CD is broken (or even if its not), you're entitled to retrieve another copy of your licensed media for backup/archiving purposes.

It is not legal.

You said iit yourself n your own sentence, "... obtain this music illegally ..."

The legal thing to do would be to contact the copyright holder of the recording. They will then issue you a new WMA file or a new CD for a mimimum of charge.

i personally think that once you own something, you should be able to do anything you want with it. Like share it. I remember awhile back i heard this guy was being sued by a ISP becasue he bought high-speed from them and then shared it freely through a wireless access point. I forget what happened but i think he had the right to share that internet access and i think people have the right to share music/movies/software or anything for that matter. If someone wants to share a car or a house, no one gets arrested for that now do they.
My 2 cents

you should be able to make a copy of any cd that you already own. In that case you should be able to aquire any songs on cd's that you already own.
