Should Apple use more durable and scratch resist' materials?

I have barely touched it, and it just got a scratch in the screen...!
Are new iPods VERY prone to get scratched, or what ???

Yes, they must - and they must add RADIO to the thing

well of course everone's going to say Yes, I don't really see an argument here that could provoke No or Who Cares answers (like ".... at the cost of $30 added to the MSRP price").

I brought my 60GB Black with me to the city and had it under my ass for a whole day and it didn't get scratched.
You don't see people complaining that their china glasses are broken when they drop them do you?
People don't make a fuss over their cars getting scratches or dings when they touch other things.
People are expecting an invincible product from Apple, which isn't what an iPod is.
Apple wants their iPods to look shiny and attractive, well, that comes with the price of them getting easily scratched. If you don't want it to get scratched, use a case.

Exactly.. I treat my expensive electronics with great care. If I'm not going to care for it, I can't expect it to stay in perfect condition.

Though I'd love to agree with you, Ii just cant.
I believe that a few of the major selling points of the apple are its good looks, and the ability for it be be put in your pocket. These are NORMAL uses for the product.
You compare the iPod to china being dropped and and cars being scratched in a collision.
I believe that your comparison is incorrect because
-People buy china to eat off of, and to look good. The china would have to horribly scratch while eating normally. Which for the most part, it doesn't do.
-People buy cars to get around, and usually to look good while doing it. The car would have to scratch under typical road use. Cars don't scratch simply from driving them.
I don't think people are expecting an invincable product from Apple, if I dropped mine (an unintended occurence), I would not be angry over scratches. When I put mine alone in my pocket to listen to music, I WOULD be angry if i looks as though i was abusing it.
Frankly, i have no idea why apple is making the things so scratched, other than maybe planned obsolescence. If that is the plan, its pretty pathetic.

My friend, you just hit the nail right on the head.
My proof? How many times has the iPod been 'updated' since last year? At least 4 or 5.

i dont see that much more headroom in ipod development. only improvements left is better battery life, higher resolution, size, and maybe hard drive space.

Yeah, i kind of realized that near to the end of my psot. I think the viode is OK, but the nano scratching, its pretty safe to say, was a mistake.
Yea, my 20 gig ipod has had a full case on it since the first day i bought it and i took it out the case today and the screen was scratched i was pretty pissed.

ya it really is a stupid move by apple to make their screens/products out of those materials, they look good for about a day ...
one friend had his nano screen scratched by the very headphones it came with, and another's 20GB colour is clearly scratched all over the front after just a few weeks ...
in contrast, i've had my iaudio x5, with some kinda metal alloy casing and a tougher clear screen, since august, it's never been in a case, i use it every single day, and there isn't a scratch on it, it's just better material to start with that makes the difference ... oh and btw, it plays video, gets the radio, records from line-in, voice, or radio, and has a billion other features the video ipod still doesn't D
Sounds good how big is the hard drive??

they should make the ipod out of watever the heck the motorola e815 is made out of. boy did i waste money buying a case for that! ive dropped on concrete, gravel, jsut tonigt i accidentally stabbed it with my car key - not one damn scratch on it. that thing is invincible!
when my ipod came, i was ready for it with a vinyl cover for now, til my hard case comes. hopefully i didnt scratch it while putting the vinyl on haha

I've had a silicone case on my iPod since I got it, but I can't get the fucking thing off to see if it does it's job or not. ?
Apple, or any major company, are going to make their products (or at least the ones readily available to consumers) only last a limited amount of time or only able to withstand a certain amount of wear and tear. They wouldn't make nearly as much money as they do if they made invincible, everlasting products.
It sucks, but unless one of us become C.E.O then I don't see a change anytime soon.

that's true ... but if other companies ARE making their products last longer, the question is why ... it's because apple obviously has the lion's share of the DAP industry right now, and they're comfortable where they are, while other companies are trying to get to the top ... it can therefore be stated, that everyone who buys an ipod is just prolonging the ipod's relative mediocrity ... so shame shame on all of you ;) lol ...
oh and jan, i could've got the 20GB version (made to match the ipod of the summer) for the same price as the ipod, but i slurged and spent an extra 40$ on the 30GB ... if i'd put out another 30$ on top of that, i coulda got the 30GB X5L, which has 35 hours of battery life lol, but i'm fine with the 15 i get currently
