Hey Guys,

So my brother built a Desktop for my girl and we're having some issues. Everything boots up fine everything seems to be working. I'm installing XP and after it formats during the initial installation it starts to copy the drivers. I've tried installing XP like 20 times and sometimes I get the blue screen of death, sometimes it just freezes, sometimes it says I'm missing a file so it never completes the copying of the drivers. I've used 3 different copies of XP that people have given me or I've had around the house. At first I thought it was the copy but after using 3 different ones I don't think it is. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch.

Are any of the 3 copies legitimate Microsoft CDs?

That shoud not matter, could be a corrupted HDD? Or CD-ROM.

If its getting through even a portion of the installation I doubt its a hardware problem ( As unlikely as it is that you have 3 "bad" discs...it sounds like thats the problem.

bad hdd or motherboard, probably motherboard.

hehehhehe

07-11-2005 22:02:48

Have you tried installing from a hard drive? Just copy the i386 folder to your hd and try to install from there.

It's a brand new installation. Windows hasn't ever been on it before. Would the discs be bad even if one was used 3 days ago and it worked fine? The other ones also worked fine.

i can almost garuntee its some sort of ide controller issue on the motherboard.

it could be the ram...i had the same thing happen to me and the ram was not compatible with the board

It could be the discs dude, thats probebly what it is. What you should do is start it with one disc in, and if it gives you an error that it cant find a file, take that CD out, and put another one in, and just wait and see if it keeps copying the files. Some CD drives are more sensitive than otheres, and that has happened to me before. Just try that and see if it helps.

in my experience this is a ram or motherboard compatibility issue. usually IDE drivers. xp is picky about them. try disabling features related to the IDE drivers in the bios and see if that helps. also, if you have a pci ide controller try disabling the onboard one and using that.

only have 1 cd drive? have an external one you can try installing from?

you could try out UltimateBootCD and run some of the memory tests to rule out any problems with your ram.

i'd also check that your HD and cdrom IDE/ATA cables are seated properly. i've had some similar problems and found out it was crappy IDE cables.

also, everest is a good tool for identifying hardware in your computer (handy when you forget exactly what the model # is of your motherboard). you can download it at www.lavalys.com ... i was able to identify a problem with my IDE controller in windows that was easily fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the IDE controller driver (it had automagically downgraded DMA levels on me and wouldnt revert back to UDMA5)

Are those parts all new (not used or bought on ebay or something)? I bought a P4 1.6A CPU and part of the L2 Cache was corrupt so I couldn't ever install SP1 or SP2 on windows XP. I had to use the original 2600 release 8)

I would almost guarantee that its not an issue with the disc's, but that its a hardware problem. My guess would be either the CPU or the RAM. Try both in different computers to see how they act and go from there.

hairyferry

08-11-2005 22:36:40

yeah everything is brand spankin new... with the new car smell included. My brother is taking it to school to run some tests on it in the morning so we'll see if he can find anything.

It can be anything, biggest suspects would be the

1. motherboard
2. power supply
3. ram

I decided to run that Everest program, cause my second hard drive has been getting louder and louder clicking all the time. I got this message.

[quote926a4ebbb7]Reallocated Sector Count - Pre-Failure Imminent loss of data is being predicted[/quote926a4ebbb7]

So I guess my hard drive could take a shit anytime now. I've had it for around 14 months now so the warranty is toast. I've looked around and it seems like there's no way to fix it. Is that right?

Admin

09-11-2005 07:48:18

pretty much. i'd make sure to get anything you value off of that drive. then you should decide what you want to do with it. i.e. sell on ebay as working but no warranty or just use it until it dies.
