I know this is a strange thread but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, will people understand this. Its not here but in the last few weeks I've been bombarded by retards saying, "my ISP says I should get 3 megabytes per sec. download but I max out at like 375 kilobytes. They are fucking me."

OK people ISPs measure in kiloBITS per second and when you use Kazaa or download a file or torrent or whatever it is measured in kiloBYTES per second. A byte is 8 bits. So your ISP is advertising 3 megabits not bytes. You are getting exactly what you paid for. Big B = byte, small b = bit...

Sorry about the rant but people just don't seem to get it and I mostly blame it on the ISPs being lame and confusing people...

heh, japan has usen.ad.jp which is like in-home fiber. they get speeds from 10mbit (~1000KB/s) to 100mbit (~10000Kb/s) easy. trust me wink

Yeah this always bothered me when people thought that. My ISP gives me 15mbit down, and I download somewhere around 1800kb/s. I just wish I could download at 15mb/s. Hopefully that day will come soon.

a MegaByte is written MB
a MegaBit is written Mb

upper or lowercase b is all that matters, mB and MB are the same thing. I prefer lowercase m eternally.

Your ISP does this because speed has always been measured in bits per second, because at the physical level all you are doing is sending voltage changes on a line for 1 or 0. Or on and off if you are using fiberoptics, or on or off in a certain color if you are using special fiberoptics ). I am not sure if wifi uses 1 or 0 but I am fairly sure it does. So it really is not a marketing scheme, that is just how communications is measured. mIRC uses bps too, and a lot of old traditional programs do.

It blows my mind how all computers are are just "turning on and off" machines. I took a computer a class at school, and learning actually how complex a computer is is amazing. Whats really crazy is wifi and bluetooth... its fucking crazy. lol.

At its core all a computer is is 90nm or 120nm silicone chips (at least now adays). In which one side of the silicon has one extra valence electron, and the other has one less in the valence orbit. One side is N the other side is P. Electricity is cool

I just think its lame that ISPs use bits because they know the average person doesn't know the difference betweeen bytes and bits.

Just as lame as when you go an buy a 160 GB HDD... Yes, its 160 GB (in decimals 160,000,000,000 bytes).. But PC don't work with decimals (they work with binary).. Its 1,024 bytes to 1 Megabyte.. So you actually get 149 GB instead of 160 GB.

Why is that? Same reason the ISPs do it.

Its not 149, its more like 156.25 - buffer (2 or 8MB). Thats not as bad.

But I don't know if your theory is correct because 1GB=1024MB and 1MB=1024KB and 1KB=1024B therefore 1GB=1,073,741,824B.

If the HD was a 160 billion byte drive, you'd be right but saying 160GB implys 160li1,073,741,824B...

Ok you are right. HD manufacturers consider 1KB=1000B so you lose 24B per KB... Not that big a deal, I think ISPs are way worse...
