Are torrents "safe"...?

I don't know if Kazaa is kind of similar to torrents (at least it is p to p), but the first time I downloaded it, I got my pc completely crashed two days after that. A total mess, a horrible virus, and it was brand new... yeah, crapy luck.

Anyways, what do you guys know about this?

I know there's another thread about TV Torrents, but it doesn't address this issue of "potential-contamination"... so are video torrents good??

...?
It has nothing to do with the program, it has to do with the content you download. Just like downloading files off the internet (directly from a host/server machine) peer to peer can also give you bad files. Its noones fault but your own.

I know, you're absolutely right. I should say, then are the odds against me, though??

Kazaa and torrents are different P2P methods. Personally, i think Kazaa files are much more pron to having virus'. But the only way to be safe, it to have a good virus program, and scan every P2P download. Also, on torrent tracker sites, they allow users to give reviews, so you can read if people have gotten virus' from the files.

The majority of torrents are safe; they don't contain viruses. It's easier to avoid downloading viruses also, because you get to see the type of file you're downloading (a lot of viruses come as .exeurl==http://=http:///url) and if you download from a site like TorrentSpy.com you can see what people have to say about the torrent. Also, like Pienecone said, you should have a good antivirus program to scan whatever you download.

Torrents won't give you a virus 99% of the time. If you are getting your torrents from TorrentSpy or one of the big public ones, you have a chance but its not like Kazaa. Just scan everything you d/l before you play it...

You have to look in the file you download and all the containments.

Kazaa is chock full o' virii, and has been for a long time. (

Seen a smattering on DC++ and WinMX, but precious little. Not seen any on torrents at all. I'd be more worried about IP addy gleaning by MPAA peers if I were you.
