Is it possible to get an AVI (encoded in Divx, if it matters) working in a standalone DVD player? how?

I already have a dvd player which does not play AVIs. I will never ever buy another one in my entire life. I want to play some on my existing one. Possible?

use tmpgenc to encode the avi to mpg format and burn it.

that's only assuming her unit plays cdr's/vcd/svcd/etc.
