I originally posted here about a computer of mine being able to handle XP, but heres another question i have.

on my one computer (the high end one) i can access a folder called "shared" on the desktop of my shit computer downstairs. if i put something from the shit computer in the shared folder, i can see it on the good one, and likewise if i put something from the good one into the shared folder, i can see it on the shit computer.

thing is, whenever i am on the shit computer and i try to access files or folders on the good computer that i have set to be able to share with other computers, it asks me for a name and password to access the good computer, but no matter what i type, it just doesnt work.

ive tried everything, but it still wont let me access any folders or files on the good computer.

its not THAT big of a deal, but it can be kind of annoying.

any ideas?

it should be alright, not great but windows 2000 and xp are pretty equivalent in reqs

i know when you install XP it checks if your system is capable or not, but is there somewhere online i can go to check if its capable?

that would be sweet.

hehehhehe

Yeah, it'll handle it fine, no need to check. I have a P3 800MHz 256MB RAM laptop that runs xp fine.

It would have no problem with XP. Your main concern would be memory, but 512 is enough. I've got an old box running an AMD Duron 800 mhz with 352 MB of RAM and it runs XP perfectly fine considering it's age.

Yes, it runs fine. System Requirements for Operating Systems are generally just a recommendation for optimum performance, and in my opinion, an attempt by Microsoft to push consumers to upgrade their system hardware (or, by a new system all together!).

enable the guest account.

also, make sure you are behind a firewall/router before doing that (which you probably are)

enable guest account on computer with stuff you want shared.

right click my computer > manage > local users and groups > users > right click "Guest" > properties > uncheck account is disabled

ok did that, but now it says

Logon Failure the user has not been granted the requested logon at this computer.

?

What the balls... well, you could give the guest account regular user account access... ummm... okay, whatever the logon name for the other computer (the one with out the files) create an account on the computer with the files with the same username and password (if the password is blank, leave it blank on both ends)

ok when i went to create a new account, it said the Guest acount was turned off, so i turned it on. i cant get onto my other computer at the moment to see if it works or not, but when i can, ill let you know if it works.

thanks! D

nope, still no worky (

i ran the XP "setup small home or office network wizard" and it went through it and said at the end, "if you have other computers you would like on this network, but dont run XP, put the XP CD in the computer and run the network wizard from there".

i still havent put XP on the 2000 machine yet because its my mother-in-laws computer and she wantedXP on yesterday, but today she doesnt roll

of course the network wizard only runs on every other OS, except the one my computer runs (2000).

so im still at a stand still.

what about...software firewall? is there a software firewall on? have you shared anything out yet? what else... check those two things.

nope no software firewall.....although my version of kaspersky (personal pro, 5.0.372) ive noticed it conflicts with some things online, i cant connect to certain games and stuff unless i disable it.

i have 1 muic folder on the good (XP) computer that i want to share with the shit (2000) computer downstairs, ive set it to share and everything but i just cant access the good computer, from downstairs. its says "access denied".

also, i tried setting up a new network (home) yesterday, and it made it alongside the worgroup network. now on the good computer i cant see the workgroup, and the "home" network doesnt work.

ive fucked something up somewhere along the line. (

okay... download this http//www.angryziber.com/ipscan/ and scan your network. open it, click the "IP ^" button, then "Class C" then click Start. After the scan finishes go Utils > Delete from List > Dead Hosts

Find the computer that is hosting the files IP address.

Click start, click run type in \\IP.ADDRESS.OF.COMPUTER (ie, 192.168.1.100) and see if that gets you into the machine.

nope (

still "access denied".

on the XP computer (the one with the files), im logged in as a user that has admin rights, but on the shit computer (the one that i want to use to access the files) im logged in is the admin. ?
