I've used Norton Internet Security the past two years and now I have to purchase a updated copy. I don't have the proof of purchase from last year's Norton (I sent it in to get a rebate)...does that mean I have to pay like $40-50 in-store for it?

Check the slickdeals forums, I just saw an offer for norton internet security (new) for $10 or something after all these goofy rebates.

I use to work at Symantec, I couldve hooked you up. Basically from my understanding everyhting was subscription based and you could probably download a newer version online through a supposed fee. Loved how that company makes money through subscriptions. Better yet go download a copy off IRC or something, itll save you a lot of money and will make me much happier. In fact everyone go out and download all of Symantec software. If you need help send me a PM. JK. Im not helping you get the warez but do find and download them yourselves
