I've had this really good and unique idea for a site and I was going to start one and then I decided against it and now I'm thinkin about it. My question is, how much capital do you think I would need to survive?

It depends on what you're giving away.

The stuff would cost from 250-500 bucks and I'd probably ship once or twice a month.

I'll say about $4000 - $5000.

Seriously, if you're asking that question....more than you've got. Try to estimate the absolute most users you think will place an order before you receive your affiliate checks, and add about 15% to the cost of the (number of users) li (the cost of the gift). Don't forget to calculate shipping costs. That should give you a [ua76732942b]rough[/ua76732942b] estimate of how much capital you'll need.

Well, that's the reason I made this thread. To know when to start the site.

Remeber, your advertisers might not pay you right off the bat so you've got to be prepared to send out two months of gifts before you see a penny. I'd say you would need about 7 grand to really make things happen, plus a dedicated server (another $100/month) and a professional webdesign.

Well, I heard most start up sites don't ship anything out until the first commission check. What do you guys think of that?

I think for a new site to be seen in a good light, they can't wait until they receive their first check.

You really don't need a dedicated box to host a little freesite.

Are you sure that's not just because you want to get your gift as fast as possible? Haha, people in the freebie scene aren't exactly the ones I am going to market to at first considering they're the ones that make the companies go broke.

If you are doing a new site, and you want people to do it, (especially people not in the freebie scene), then you must not wait for the check. People not int he freebie scene are even more skeptical about these sites, and if they see it takes forever to ship, they think scam.

I don't agree.

Remember when Gratis used to take like 4-6 weeks?

When I waited for Gratis to send me the iPod (Oct or '04), I wasn't skeptical. Mostly because the iPods were backordered and they communicated that with their "customers." Besides, Gratis (Freepay) is known for being THE freebie site.

Actually, my bad, I meant Prizecube's site. When it was around and legit and stuff, people would do it even though they had to wait months. But anyways, my goal is to ship twice a month but we'll see.
