There is so much advertising in these magazines that they don't necessarily need to take in subscription cost to stay afloat. So they offer it to you free for a year and hope you like the magazine enough to pay for it next year.

Personally I'd like to see a free year of cargo to extend my subscription... best mens magazine on the shelves.

These magazines get paid from the advertisors depending on circulation. So they give away some to boost circulation.
