I had to clean my gf's click wheel after she stained it reading the newspaper. A damp towel didn't work but you know what worked great? A simple eraser. Use the smoother kind, like those staedtler white ones since they seem less abrasive.

I used isopropyl alcohol, but I used too much, it seeped in the clickwheel, and went dead. shock
Luckily it evaporated and all went back to normal like 30 mins later, but just imagine if I used water. shock shock shock
Anyhow, I bought an iPod skin that covered the clickwheel soon afterward
