Is it easy to mess around with someone else's computer? I just clicked on this guy's profile's link - http//forum.freeipodguide.com/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=5655

Here is a good way to start testing out IPaddress exploits
once you get someones IP address Put it in a program called [b989e3c701c]Xscan[/b989e3c701c]
it can search a single ip or a wide range of IPs for various exploits.
There is an old exploit called the Nt Server Hack that will allow you to completely take over another computer. I used to be into that shit a long time ago back when i was acquiring bots (Slave computers) For my IRC channel... Also get firmiliar with netcat and the SQL exloit
THis is mostly script kiddie stuff and not really hardcore hacking.... roll
its a start though...

i eventually had to use a program that just force-deleted the whole norton folder and then cleaned up the registry.

id never use norton. ?

that's fine... if you are running something that is a firewall you are safe-ish. Your best bet is running a router to protect yourself. Unless you are going through a proxy every website can grab your IP. That page is nothing special. http//ipmonkey.com/ does the exact same thing. If you have a router thats a good hardware firewall that will keep most people out unless you open up ports. I'd suggest a software firewall like Zone Alarm or McAfee to further help keep people out and keep programs from accessing the internet that you don't want.

if you get someones ip address you can do tons of things, it really is dangerous and you should do the neccessary precautions to make sure your ip address doesnt get in the wrong hands. If someone has your ip they can
-Takeover your identity (get your social security number)
-Make charges on your credit card (able to trace back any of your credit card numbers)
-Find your name, street, address, telephone number
-Get access to your bank account

You guys are kidding, right?

I'll tell you how that site does what it does
It uses an IP2Location database (eg. www.ip2location.com) to check your location. It got mine wrong. It's not super accurate.

It looked up the owner of your IP block. You can do this, too. Go to http//ws.arin.net/whois and put your IP in the box. Look for the OrgName field. Bam, your ISP.

So yes, any website you visit can see your IP, but that doesn't mean its some magical portal. If you're properly secured with a firewall, in 999 out of 1000 cases, the worst someone can do is DDoS you.

and bruman, you are a grade-a moron and the reason I'm worried about heading into the IT field. Please pick a new major.

Ok so I'll call you on this. Take the ip 71.108.159 and tell us all that info and get access to his cc and bank account... yeah, I didn't think so.

Knowing the IP alone does nothing. Only if you can hack in to his pc and run some exploits and keyloggers can you do stuff.

One thing you should do is change your default PW and username on your router from admin 1234 or whatever so if someone does get into your network they can't change shit.

I think a bigger problem than knowing an IP is unsecure wireless. I can take my laptop to the park, jump on someone's unsecure wireless, hack the government, d/l some kiddie porn, and make a bomb threat and the FBI will be kicking down their door, not mine...

No, you're not giving away ANY information but the information you submit to signup for the given site. Bruman is really confusing you. The only way they're going to get your SS#, bank account, credit card, etc, is if they have access to your computer (whether they hack it or access it physically) and you have that information stored on your computer somewhere (or by use of keyloggers etc). This is why people are recommending firewalls.

Just because someone knows your IP address doesn't mean they can automatically get your information. It's just like someone knowing your home address, they can't get your credit cards unless they physically break into your house and take them. Knowing a persons IP address is the first step to breaking into your computer, but it doesn't just give away your personal information.

To summarize, your IP address gives away nothing, but your poorly secured computer could give away a lot.

I'm pretty sure the BEFSR41 does have a firewall.

Its NAT on most linksys, no actually firewall. Well NAT is a firewall. It basically hides all your inside comps ip addresses to one IP address outside. There is actually 3 types of NAT, it uses that one. The other are more advanced.
