Im looking at the Dell Color Printer 720 right now, but im not sure if dell's printers are good. Basically I just need one that prints black and white. Also if there are any free sites that offer printers let me know. Thanks.

if you buy a dell printer you wont be able to buy ink from retail stores
you'll have to buy them off dell.com or their 1-800 number

Shame you missed the Dell 3100cn's (color laser printers) for $130 about two weeks ago.
I bought five, sold four. Contemplating hooking the fourth one up.

hp printers are pretty good. Not as good as canon printers but if your just looking for a regular non-photo printer then i recommend the HP deskjet
5740

im pretty sure that printer requires multiple toners though
although the toner will last a long time its expensive as shit...
not worth it at all for the average person

Here's what I'm getting, HP all-in-one, like $100 after shipping.

if you go back to the original thread, i think someone linked to a site that actually compares laser printers to their toner life.
as it turns out, in all five models, its cheaper to buy a brand printer package (which come with all the toners) than buy new toners seperatly.

So I should stick to inkjet printers? Someone said if I was doing straight up black and white I should get laser. Anyways, I had a HP a while ago and the problem with that printer sometimes wouldnt take the paper even when it was loaded properly. The canon my friend has works fine. So my question is whats a good canon? -then I can just compare the prices of the HP 5740 and your recommended canon.

People used to say "get a laser" if you're doing black and white and doing high volume printing keep in mind the toner in printers usually costs 80$ + but last from 2500-5000 pages vs the 30$ inkjet printers that last 300-400 pages Lasers arent really meant for home use.
All the canon printers ive seen have really small print cartridges
so i wouldnt recommend them for most people. Unless your like me and dont really mind buying tons of cartridges D

Keep in mind the hp 5740 is compatible with the 94(black) 95(color) 96(high capacity black) and 97(high capacity color) cartridiges
the 96 and 97 cartridiges cost 30$ and 35$ respectively and do 800 and 450 pages....

I've used laser's all my life. I have had to buy new toner zero times. Every time the printer dies before the toner runs out (I always used old ones).

HP will cost you more in ink if you are planning on printing pictures. Go with Canon or Epson. Canon has the cheapest ink.

canon does have super cheap ink.... my black ink Costs me 8 dollars
but its small as hell. Id be lucky to get more than 250 pages with it D
not bad considering the cost though.....

Also, canon ink cartridges are small, the same as epson, but canon's waste the least ink of most printers. And almost all digital photographers will tell you to use canon ink for the best photo results.

Even though I sweet talk the canon up there for their ink, I love my Epson r200 for the fact that it prints on cds/dvds and i can still get the ink cheap.

wasnt there a deal for the Dell 720 for $12.65 like two weeks ago?
I think forum user "luca bella" bought 10 of em. She probably still has a few left if you want to buy one cheap.
