I just found out the other day, that if you go back to 1981, and measure the rate of inflation, and apply it to gas prices, we are paying EXACTLY what we should be.
It made me feel a lilittleli better about the whole situation.

Get used to high oil prices. The Saudis have just announced that they wont be able to meet the growing demand for oil around the world. They have decided to start drilling offshore and they have bid up a few oil rigs to do so. If the Saudis have so much oil in the desert (as a lot of people claim), then why are they deciding to drill offshore (where it is far more expensive to do so)?

Worthy logic but highly unlikely, IMHO.

The Saudis are running out and they know it. They are just finally beginning to admit to it. The easiest oil to get in Saudi Arabia has already been drilled out and used. They have been drilling hardcore in Saudi Arabia for many years and I am willing to bet that the reserves are lower than most people think.

The other problem with Alaska is that the projections of how much oil there is there are extremely speculative and these claims that the reserves held there could supply the States with oil for many years are bullshit. The only people propagating that myth are the ones who stand to profit from the limited amount of oil available there.

The US Geographical Survery has issued a statement saying how much oil they estimate to be in the wildlife refuge and it is nowhere near what the oil execs and lobbies claim there exists there.

The reason I have a problem with Alaska drilling is because of the inevitable destruction of the wildlife habitats there. We've already killed off enough species on this planet and we definitely don't need to kill anymore.

Oil is essentially a thing of the past. Its time to move onto more sustainable sources of energy and a better mode of living.

You have some very great points Jake. Nice to see people formulating complete and thought out opinions on here )
I agree it's time to ditch oil and start finding alternate sources of energy...like...NOW

And I also agree with what you said about the wildlife.
Maintaining what little habitat we have left is essential.

My one question to you is Wouldn't the Saudi's prosper more if they told us they had less oil then they really did?
According to the laws of supply and demand, the less you have of something, the more you can sell it for.

That is very true.

The reason I doubt that this is the case is because the Saudis have been saying that they can keep up with demand for a long time. This statement is one of the first ever to admit that they cannot do what they have been promising all these years.

Although, you do have an excellent point. The Saudis have all of the control over their supply and can gouge everyone else if they play up stories about lower supplies.

They may be mad at the US and its policies and they may be saying, 'Enough!'

Since the Saudis and the US have had a deep relationship all these years, the Saudis doing an about face is very significant.

We'll see how this plays out.

well its $3.19 and rising earlier today it was at $2.59 but people found out that our pipeline from Mississippi has been down for 2 days since the storm. So everyone in GA is freaking out there are over 1hr lines at gas stations and terrible traffic like it wasnt bad enough. The Governor even made a press release saying that we get most of our oil from tankers but people are still freaking out. Which really sucks for me cause i am almost out of gas.

I used to laugh at my friend who bought a scooter a few years back... now I'm wishing I had one instead of my over-the-top-gas-guzzling SUV.

I went to lunch today - as I walked into Quizno's the gas at the station next door was $2.59. I came out approximately 8 minutes later and gas was 3.09 a gallon. I put $25.00 in my tank and I'm barely at a half a tank of gas. This is getting scary.

halfbreed

Supply and demand is what is going to kill us here in California. If you can go sell the gas on the east cost for $4 a gallon, where is a majority of it going to go to? So here in cali we'll have less and that will cause a huge increase. I wish the government would put a limit on the gas prices, but this would most likely cause many stations to go out of business.

While eating, it was clear that NO ONE was pumping over at the Fastrack, and there were huge lines at the Hess. Thing is, before leaving, I watched Fastrack bump their gas up to $3.09....looks like they know just when Hess will be running out.

i bought a book at barnes and noble on what is called "oil peak". i am sure some of you have heard about the concept but that book is essential to your life right now. i am going to my grandmas place this weekend. she lives in the boonies on a huge lake in oklahoma and my step grandpa is a huge hunting and fishing person. if things do turn out the way they are suppose to you can expect to be living in the 18th century. we are running out of oil, and fast. i am thinking about planting some vegetables at her place in case i have to move there to survive. it will be hard to drive 200 miles away but it is safe there. cities are not the place to live in the next couple of years. even though i want to go to nyu or some other nice college if things continue at this rate i will be unable.

you should definitely get "The Party's Over" by David Heinburg.
http//search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=kB284kxBYs&isbn=0865714827&itm=1

gregcool

31-08-2005 22:41:05

Well, I got it at 2.88 around 7pm, then saw a small gas station after that, that was still at 2.55 ( They had some long lines though. I am in Raleigh NC. NC is running out, fast. Ashville NC is basically completely out of Gas, so are some other smaller cities in NC. Doesn't look good for us ( They need to get those lines running again...

gregcool

31-08-2005 22:44:53

And for anyone wondering how long our gas will last here. Lets put it this way, 90% of our gas in NC comes from the 2 lines that are currently down. No one has had a "refill" since Sunday. Now, each refill lasts 5-7 days. But, now everyone is rushing out to fill up, so make that time span shorter, and it doesn't look good. WE NEED GAS, FROM SOMEWHERE. Hell, I don't mind paying the cash, as long as I can actually get gas (

no0ne2k

31-08-2005 22:52:58

I had to do the same as Stroid this afternoon. ~9 gallons of Supreme cost me almost $28. Most of the gas stations near me were completely out by the time I got home from work. Only one station had any left and it was all 93 octane.

The news was showing some local stations running their prices up to $5.87 a gallon. I hope those guys get stuck with a nice fine for price hikes. They should have to refund everyone that paid those prices. twisted
