thanx, I already found that. Does anyone see a diff. between this and 3420 other than the dual layer stuff? Also, what are the maximum speeds I can hope for burning through an external enclosure? one last q, is $30 for 100 8x discs a good deal? Anything better avail.?

I second the NEC 3540. Got one a few weeks ago and love it. I'd say $30 per 100 is good, as long as they are good discs.

always get ritek dvd-r's. they are the best and are decently priced.

I'd say taiyo yudens are the best, although I can appreciate ritek for its value.

Freedesktoppc,
it really depends on what you need it to do. For instance, if you're only going to burn mostly DVD-Rs and don't necessarily need 48x burner, you'd want to chose a different burner then if you'd mainly be burning DVD+Rs, etc. If your looking for speed, the Pioneer is rather slow when compared to it's competitors. http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101651 This is a very popular burner amongst the dvd burning gurus now, as it is PACKED with features. With available software from the manufacturer, you can select an option to over-speed all media. (i.e. burn a 4x DVD-R at 16x.) As far as media goes, it really depends once again on the manufacturer. Ritek is known to have bad quality control, so one batch may be fine, and the next horrible. Bestbuy is having a good sale on blank DVD media this week I believe, Fujifilm 8x DVD-/+R 50 pack for $19.99. You must look for the packs that say "Made in Japan" because that indicates discs are Taiyo Yudens. Media codes and manufacturers could turn into 15 pages of information, but all you need to know right now is that the fujifilm discs I mentioned are regarded as the best quality money can buy as far as blank dvd media goes. Sorry that was so lengthy, hopefully it's useful!

better than verbatim?

Well verbatim is usually a safe bet to go with too, they are produced by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and are usually pretty reliable. Taiyo Yudens sustain great quality even when burned 200% their advertised value of 8x.

get nec... i had a pioneer and that bitch was great, up untill it died on me. get semi-cheap media and burn at 4x... to save yourself from getting coasters... make sure not to buy silver-top media... that sux ass.

BenQ's are great if cash is an issue, great quality, and plenty of firmware upgrades.

i'd rather get dvd-r's... cheaper and is supposedly more compatible to players (than dvd+r's)

I just got 2 of the NEC 3540's. Haven't got the computer running yet, but heard great things about them. AS far as media, ritek is the best.
