in response to the original post though, you have to realize that we have really goofy ass shows, but at the same time, people in asia, europe, and africa watch shit like jerry springer where american people come on the show with stories like, "im screwing my own sister", "i have a midget fetish", "trailer park drama".....etc....

so i mean at the same time, i think we as americans have the same kind of embarassing shows and it is only when you go abroad and go to other countries where we get the finger pointed and laughed at....

went to france this summer and it was just embarassing as hell when i would be flipping through the channels and springer would come on and all the european kids were like, you guys are really fucked up...

on the surface it wouldn't seem like an offensive term, like calling a professor a prof ... but i think the origin of the term has some hatred in it, and also the term jap was used often during the US-involved stages of WWII as a derogatory term for the japanese soldiers

I do understand what you mean, these words by themselves are pretty harmless. They even go for the two words you mentioned and other words for other races. What the hell is a spic (short for hispanic) anyway, or even wop (WithOut Papers), dago (derived from Diego), guido (common name), etc... They're just short for something, or come from harmless roots. "Nigger" is derived from Latin word for black. Pretty harmless, right?

However, you have to consider how they have been used and what emotions are contained within. The real users of these words were being hateful or derogatory. During WW2 it was understandable as they were killing each other, but not now. If you feel that these words aren't racist, fine, but I bet a lot of people would disagree with you.
