wi-fi service?

i was wondering if there was a service kind of like a cell phone service but for computers. that way i can go on trips and still be connected to the internet.

Although, you can also get a cellular PCMCIA card for your laptop, and get coverage as long as there are cell towers around.

If you just need low bandwidth, get a T-mobile account and sign up for the $4.99/month T-zones (I think the price is still the same). You can configure it so you can tether you laptop/pda to your gprs capable cell and get internet anywhere for cheap.

Otherwise, you can look for free/public hot spots around wherever you are.

I heard of this one service that, other than being VERY expensive, uses satellites to give you a wireless connection wherever you go. Of course, it'll be a while before this becomes mainstream.

it is possible. All you need is a data plan from a cellular provider. Hehehe suggested a good one. You need to get one of those cards for your laptop though. You can access the internet anywhere you can get a connection. It will pretty much work everywhere that cell phones do and more. The 4.99 data plan from T-mobile is good for checking email going on aim and stuff like that. IF you want power upgrade to a better plan. The one fore 20 dollars a month is very good. Cingular and T-mobile have good data plans. You should check it out trace. Or if your phone has bluetooth and web browsing and internet access, you can connect to your powerbook sicne you have bluetooth and use internet that way. I suggest talking to a cingular or T-mobile representatives about their data plands and the special cards for the laptops.

Actually, it's getting hard to find a place [i6066b7a8d9]without[/i6066b7a8d9] wi-fi coverage, unless you're in the middle of the ocean.

The satellite services you speak of are from Iridium and Globalstar, the satellite phone providers. With an Iridium or Globalstar phone and a cable (or PC card?), you actually [i6066b7a8d9]could[/i6066b7a8d9] browse the web from the middle of the ocean. )

Or just buy a cable off eBay for whatever phone you have now.

I just use a bluetooth phone and a bluetooth adapter (or my bluetooth pda) so no cables are needed and no pc modem cardas are needed. With the $4.99 plan you can pretty much whatever you can with the $20 plan (small hack) but no SSL or other ports. Speed is the same.

It's just a proxy setting. T-mobile runs a proxy server, so you enter the port# in your config so your phone/pda/laptop have access to pages that are non-wap. Otherwise, you're only allowed to use wap through your phone.
