Making fun of somebody and calling them gay isn't homophobia.

[quoteb0f8535e9e="drummer_kew_03"]Making fun of somebody and calling them gay isn't homophobia.[/quoteb0f8535e9e]How so, they said someone had gay moves=moves that homosexual would do and implying that that is a bad thing

tracemhunter

10-08-2005 22:08:57

are you saying that you are not stereotypical at times crynos?

theysayjump

10-08-2005 22:12:05

these days when someone says something is "gay" then they mean it is shit, or bad, or stupid.....its said in a derogatory way.

usually people only make of things or people they dont like, hate, dont agree with etc.

if you dont like gay people, then you dont like them because they are gay, which is homophobic.

Crynos

[quote58fc178024="tracemhunter"]are you saying that you are not stereotypical at times crynos?[/quote58fc178024]What youre doing isnt stereotyping (well it is, but read on), its pure ignorance, have you ever met any gay people? Very few act like as flamboyant as they are portrayed on tv etc.
Most stereotypes are based on some type of fact, this isnt

tracemhunter

10-08-2005 22:25:43

actually i do know a couple of gay people. one is into theatre or something and the other is "normal".

I can see that poor kid being tutored every night after dinner for four months straight.

She was probably that one really fat cheerleader no one on the team really related too or got along with.

She always wanted a daughter, but God gave her a son instead.
On the day he was born, she made a promise to herself that she would do everything in her power to make sure he was everything she wasn't.

The End,
Wood

the 1st thing i thought when i saw the video, was that i dont think this kid is doing it because he wants to, i think he's doing it because his parents (mum) wanted him to.

something about dick on dick action that just doesnt add up

theysayjump

10-08-2005 23:30:31

thats fine, but its one thing to not like them or disagree with what they do, its another to go around and say derogatory remarks and make fun about them, like some people on here have/do.

What pisses me off is the fact that the word "homophobia" is used in a way that isn't even close to the true definition.

homo = same, such as homogenous
phobia = fear of

Whoever coined that term needs to educate themselves on basic word origins roll

Main Entry -phobia
Function noun combining form
Etymology New Latin, from Late Latin, from Greek, from -phobos fearing, from phobos fear, flight, from phebesthai to flee; akin to Lithuanian begti to flee, Old Church Slavonic bezati
1 exaggerated fear of <acrophobia>
2 intolerance or aversion for <photophobia>

Notice the second definition.

Smart move, flaming a mod.

Check this out http//www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG2005-23,GGLGen&q=define%3A+phobia

The extremely more predominant definition is a fear. However, I'll concede that point to you and say that it can also mean an intolerance.

So, that means that homophobia is a fear or intolerance of something that is the same. Before you look it up, I know Meriam-Webster lists "homosexual" as another definition of "homo", but that is because homo is used as slang for homosexual.

Anyway, my point is that the term is inaccurate. It should be homosexual intolerance.

Locked before this becomes a flame war.
