I need a new camera

So i sold my DSC-P100, that was actually my first digital camera, time to venture further into the digital photography world. So i have been looking at several models recently. I narrowed it to the
Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D
and the
Canon EOS Digital Rebel 350D XT
Obviously the 350D is better, but it is also a additional $120 or so. For those that know what im talking about, do you think this is a justifiable cost?

I'd say since your just starting to get seriously involved in photography (or thats what you mean I believe) that you go with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D and find out how much you truly like it. It's better then spending that additional $120 and finding out you don't enjoy it as much as you thought you would.

Yeah, you can't really justify the XT just yet. The upgrade is minor (albeit important for prosumer photographers), and the 300D as halfbreed suggested is more than enough.
You can get the body alone, and probably a kit lens, for around $550 on eBay if you look hard enough.
There will be no quality degradation if you choose the 300D over the 350D or anything like that-- the XT mostly tweaked and added a few things that you can definitely live without. The megapixels mean nothing.
Oh and I would recommend the battery grip unless you have very petite hands P It is surprisingly compact for being a DSLR.
Hope I helped.

yeah the XT is freakin tiny, compared to the Rebel.
when i bought my rebel, it was around $1100, with the kit lens, a sigma tele-zoom lens, a wide angle lens, tripod, and other miscellaneous items.
the Rebel was selling for about $1000 new, but since the XT came out its just plumeted and you can now get one for about $600.
im going to be saving up to get the 20D myself (about $1500 -$2000), and will most likely spend the $250 it will cost to get my Rebel fixed in the meantime.
you could pay the extra $120 for the XT, if you can afford it that is, but you could get the Rebel, and use $120 to get a 1Gb Sandisk Ultra II memory card, and a filter.
the battery grip (although maybe on the expensive side) is also a very good investment. not only does your camera look a shitload cooler, but it will last a hell of a lot longer also.
if you have money, then get the 300D, and buy extras for it like the grip, lens, filters, cards, tripod, bag etc.
if you dont have money, then get the 300D and dont buy shit D

you could get the 50mm, f-2.8 canon lens, good for portraits, group photos....good quality, sharp and its only about $80 i think.
definitely get an extra couple of batteries though, you can get them for about $6 on ebay. BP-511 should do the trick.

I've always heard film is better than digital, if you're going into pro photography why not go with a film camera?
Or has technology developed enough to make this a moot point.
With a film camera you could set up your own dark room, that'd be cool.

Fair enough, I have a low end canon, sure beats any other brand of camera I have used.
Go with the cheaper one.

film cameras will, for the forseeable future, be better than digital. it doesnt have pixels, its just straight out quality. there may not be a big difference but it is just better in terms of quality.
my parents told me that in the UK last year there was a show on TV about film VS digital, and what they did was took the same picture, with a film camera, and a digital camera that was its closest comparable, blew them up and put them on the side of Big Ben. the film quality was better, but only if you got up close to it and had a look.
within 5-10 years i think digital will be better than film. for the moment, its the convenience and cost effectiveness that entices most digital camera buyers, over film cameras.

Yup, film will always be around, it is one of the only medias that will survive this sort of evolution (consider the direction movies and dvds are going, eventually we will be reliant on hard drives compared to discs).
However digital is more than respectable. You will have no problem going from digital to film if you decide to try it in the future, except for maybe the patience thing. Instant grafication rocks, but there is nothing like developing your own film in a dark room.
Oh and you will not find a [i5481fc438b]used[/i5481fc438b] 300D just sitting in someones basement 30 years from now, like you will with cameras.
[quote5481fc438b]8MP

It doesn't matter, I promise. Unless you are blowing your pictures to poster size regularly, 8MP means nothing. It is a selling point, that's all, something to suck people in who don't know better )

yeah, probably for the simple fact that digital (at least SLR) have a half decent resale value. you can pay $1000 for a digital SLR and sell it for $500 a year or so later.
film cameras dont have that kind of resale value nowadays, because people want convenience, ease of use and cost efficience more than quality. not that digital quality is bad, but its not as good as film at the moment.
