I soft modded my xbox when I got it several weeks ago. If you want to go that route, you'll need either an original oo7 agent under fire, mech assault, or splinter cell disc and either
- a memory card and access to an already modded xbox
or
- action replay hardware and software.
or
- some kind of usb memory reader or memory stick (even a PSP) and cable to hook it up to your xbox. And action replay software.
When I did it it cost me $17 ($9 for splinter cell and $8 for an xbox controller extension cable that I modified to hook up to a pc usb).
Look on the xbox forums and you'll get more details. Just wanted to tell you what you'd need.

I don't do that much w/ it...I just had to fix mine though b/c of a HD failure and they had a new bios and Slayer's auto installer on IRC for quick and easy DL, so it was enough for me.

Soft-mods rock. Especially if you buy the XBox. That way, it you screw it up... you just take it back. No need to open the case and void the warranty.
Soft-modded mine 2 years ago and have since upgraded the HD. Boots to Avalaunch, XBMC, or Evo and plays games from the HD or DVD. Why spend money on a modchip when you can do it all for free?
FYI... xBox-scene.com is also what I used.

Yeah I don't see the problem at all w/ soft modding either. I mean really it's probably the smarter way to go, but when I did mine that was not an option, and since I have the chip I haven't taken the time to figure out how to soft mod a box if I wanted to, although my old roomate might be a good guinea pig )

Yeah I think softmods are fine. I don't want to spend money on a chip.
