I've been finding it very hard to get to sleep these days.... It's retarded because I just sit there for HOURS and I get so bored. I guess I have an insomnia problem...

What do you do that helps you get to sleep? Do you read a book? Count sheep? Take pills?

I can't stand it... It sucks... I don't want to take pills because I'll get addicted to them. cry

yea over the past couple of weeks i have become addicted to this forum... to fall asleep i usually take "the blue pill" as my parents call it. it is an extra strength pain relief pill from eckerd. itll put you straight to sleep. you could also listen to classical music or drink something warm.

hehehhehe

15-07-2005 09:02:55

Do you exercise? If you do a decent workout (anything), it'll put you right to sleep early. When I can't sleep, it's usually because I didn't do enough during the day in general.

Yeah, don't take pills.

I have sleeping problems as well. Occasionally I take melatonin or drink some nyquill (sp?) and that does help, but not always. I sometimes turn on a TV show that isn't terribly interesting, watch while it's on and close my eyes on the commercials. I usually fall asleep right at the first break ;)

Yeah I exercise every day and I work out every other day. I swim laps in my pool every day and it's a really good cardio exercise. I don't think it's an exercise problem.

I'm an extremely light sleeper too. If a car outside pulls up to a neighbor's house it wakes me up then it takes about a half hour to an hour to get back to sleep.

Maybe I need earplugs or something because I'm extremely sensitive to sound at night. And light bothers me... The room has to be pitch black.

15-07-2005 09:24:39

oh yea, I forgot about ear plugs. I used to use them all the time when I had roommates and a dog that snores louder than any person can. My sleep was great when I used them. Even though you can hear stuff still, it just doesn't seem as startling

My previous math teacher used to have horrible sleeping problems (he would tell us about them all of the time).

Then he bought the Enya CD's Day Without Rain and Paint the Sky with Stars. He had earbud headphones and always slept in a really dark room. He would listen to songs and when he felt really relaxed and sleepy he would turn the music off of his CD player (he's a teacher at a Catholic School - he doesn't have the money for an iPod lol - I'm j/m) But anyways - he is also sensitive to sound so he left the earbuds in and slept with them. This REALLY helped him, so perhaps you could give it a try? Instead of the usual 2 or 3 hours of sleep he now got about 6-8!

hehehhehe

15-07-2005 09:28:10

You lucky bastard, you have a pool! I have to go to a gym to swim.

Yeah, maybe try earplugs and even one of those blinder things. You might not look too sexy but you gots to get some sleep.

Sounds like a good idea. Come to think of it.... My iAudio X5L(like iPod) has an auto turnoff feature after an amount of time you set. I'll try that. What kind of music is Enya CD's Day Without Rain and Paint the Sky with Stars?

Pretty lucky

I had hell insane football conditioning from 9-12 and I have to work from 4-9 tonight, and then 11-7 tommorow, and 2-7 Sunday. Then football team camp for the rest of the week.

I've been having sleeping problems too lately. My main goal was to stop laying there for hours before I feel asleep so now I just set my alarm clock really early, so that by night time I'll be super tired and go right to sleep. I know its not really a good solution, but it solves one of my problems )

And i got a question for you guys? what time do you guys ussually go to sleep around. The reason i am getin more sleep cause i go to sleep when i got no energy left and am dead tired.. not when i want to when my body does.

Enya did a lot of the music for Lord of the Rings didn't they?

They had a hit song back in the 90's it was some indian chanting, I believe it was called Return to Innocence P

So to get a good night sleep you need to-

-Hit the gym!

http//perso.club-internet.fr/saintblancat/fffoto/muscles.jpg[" alt=""/img6bf53ba34b]

-Get some cardio exercise

-Wake up early

-Use earplugs or listen to calm music if you need to

-Don't take naps during the day

That's all that I can think of. Try to add more if you can. ?

I would suggest some ambient music, played softly on headphones. I was driving home with my friend late at night a few days ago, he put on a CD by "Final", I felt so relaxed just sitting there. He told me he falls asleep to it every night.

Hmmm... I'll definately try the music. It takes your mind off of things I bet.

I listronglyli suggest quietly playing anything by Sigur Ros to put you to sleep. My GF sleeps with E2C's playing sigur ros when I'm snoring too much, ha ha.

Edit You probably have it better than me. I can't sleep earlier than 2-3am, and I have sleep apnea.

Your poor gf. My old roommate had sleep apnea. Loudest snoring ever. he would just pass out on the couch when we were playing video games and start snoring.

Okay Admin, I'm downloading some Sigur Ros. Thanks for the comments guys. I don't think I'll have a problem getting to sleep tonight because yesterday at 2 in the morning this bird came up to my window in my room that was open and started chirping like crazy.

It was 2 in the morning! Birds don't sing at 2!

Well birds always piss me off when I'm sleeping.

whenever my wife and i would go to sleep listening to Sigur Ros, we would always have really fucked up dreams.

my wife just had a sleep apnea test where she had to sleep with this thing strapped to her finger i think it was, and it would monitor your heart and shit to see if it would stop and start or if there were palpatations or if you stop breathing when you sleep.

she snores like a right fucker but the test came back fine.

whenever i have trouble getting to sleep, i just make alist in my head of things i want or would like......kinda like the ultimate wishlist.....i never actually get it finished cos i get to sleep before i get the chance lol.

J4320

15-07-2005 20:42:55

Is it really true that if you get two bowls of water and place a sleeping person's thumbs in the water they'll piss their pants?

theysayjump

15-07-2005 20:48:45

it has to be warm water....and you can just put their whole hand in or the tips of their fingers D

[quote66570bf0c4="theysayjump"]it has to be warm water....and you can just put their whole hand in or the tips of their fingers D[/quote66570bf0c4]

Me and my friend tried that on another one of our friends and he woke up and he was like, "Huh... Oh.... Eh... Huh..."

And then we started waving our arms and we were like, "This is a dream.... Your dreaming of us...." And he fell back asleep. We couldn't do that trick to him because he kept waking up. But we won with the dream part. He never mentioned us bothering him the next day. lol

Anyway, back to the sleeping topic. If I try to think of a list or something I start to get off-topic in my head than I start worrying about all of my things that I have to do and I get all stressed then I stay up even later.

I just can't win... cry

I am gonna try the music thing tonight though.

I like to take a deep breath and imagine my thoughts as filling my head, as if my head were a glass. I drain them out bit by bit until there's nothing left, and then I'm not thinking about anything.

The hard part about completely clearing your mind of thoughts is that its difficult (for people just started it) to not think about not thinking. That is, to have NO thoughts as opposed to thoughts like "this is dumb" and "okay, i'm thinking about nothing."

J4320

15-07-2005 20:58:38

I've tried that and it's incredibly hard. I can only manage it for 5 or 6 seconds.

Yeah but I've always heard that the less thoughts you have the better chance you have of falling asleep.

I used to think opposite, I thought that if you thought a whole lot your mind would get worn out and fall asleep but it doesn't.

I think I'm gonna read a book before bed too so I can get my eyes tired.

Admin

15-07-2005 21:02:32

It's kinda like meditation and it takes a lot of practice.

willr91

15-07-2005 21:04:32

If you try to roll your eyes to the back of your head (without actually doing it) it puts a ton of strain on your eyes, making it harder to keep them open. But yeah, I've been having a hard time sleeping lately too. It's always like this during the summer since I don't have to get up for school. When I wake up at 6 (usually after about 3 hours of sleep) and go to the gym in the morning I can usually fall asleep at about midnight, so that helps too.

Okay, here are the results from last night....

I made a folder called "Sleepy Time" on my computer with three songs on it and they're about 4 minutes each. The three songs are Sigur Ros - Untitled, Enya - Memory of Trees, and Enya - Paint the Sky with Stars.

It was really relaxing and I fell asleep around 15 minutes after the music ended.

I have tried thinking of my thoughts as clouds. You consintrate hard on them and picture each cloud as one thought. Then you mentally move that cloud aside till it is a clear sky. As Admin said, very hard.
