Most important invention in last 50 years

I'm trying to find inspiration for an essay I need to write for a scholarship. The essay question involves what I think is the most important invention in the last 50 years. My problem is that I have no idea. I'm not too savvy on the technological history of the last 50 years, at least consciously (or maybe the summer has just made me dumb).

What I'm asking from you is to list what you think have been important inventions in the last 50 years. If you're feeling really generous, list some reasons why they are important. Disclaimer None of your words or ideas will be used or plagerized in my essay, I'm merely looking for some inspiration (or a "DUH" moment) here.

Progress of computers? How it changed our lives

I would talk about the compressor. Imagine life w/o AC or fridges!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about going with anyways. The internet has basically made the world a much smaller place (figuratively).

Duh, it's computers (or the microprocessor). Nothing else has radically changed the things we do as much.

I would probably write how much computation has changed perception of everything and how it has enabled databases (like Google).

He needs to pick one aspect of that subject which is the microchip/microprocessor which was invented im not sure when.
