This is absolutely ridiculous.
[quote237e4d476a="CNN.com"]The Supreme Court today ruled that local governments may seize people's homes and businesses for [b237e4d476a][u237e4d476a]private economic development[/b237e4d476a][/u237e4d476a]. Susette Kelo and several other homeowners in a working-class neighborhood in New London, Connecticut, filed suit after city officials announced plans to raze their homes for a riverfront hotel, health club and offices.[/quote237e4d476a]
It would be one thing if they are going to build a library or highway, but a freaking hotel and health club?

this may sound a bit far fetched, but we were kicked out of our house cos the people who owned the land, sold it to walgreens.
my wife and mother-in-law had lived there for 25 years and now our house has been demolished and we have had to move into the cockroach infested city.
we had no choice, we got no compensation, nobody gave a shit.
we had to have a yard sale to sell all of our stuff, cos we would no have had enough room for everything.
I will never shop at Walgreens.
so yeah it does happen, has happened, will happen. cry

That's kind of different then what the supreme court ruled on.
You didn't own that land, hence the decision was rightfully someone elses.
The court ruled that the CITY can take control of the land YOU own and do with it what they want.

i know it was their right to do what they wanted to with their land, but its a similar story.
people (companies, local governments (same thing really) )really dont give a fuck about anything other than money or how they can gain from other people who they think are either too dumb, or too poor to do anything about it.

eminent domain. You do not live in a democracy, the elite aristocrats (electoral college) decide the actual outcome of the election. And the "private" property you live on can be public by eminent domain. Not to even mention the injustices of the new Patriot Act.

I think that Democracy and Capitalism can work, and it has for the most part in America. I totally support our form of government, just wish they would change a few things around \.

Eminent Domain deals specifically with taking private property and constructing something that betters the public with it.
This is taking people's homes and building something private.
two VERY different things...

I wonder how well they were compensated. I know that when the city government needed to widen a street that my house was on 10 years ago they had to pay us 1,000 per tree that they uprooted. Sure they just took a portion of our land but it was quite profitable.
If you can put aside the memories, you usually get paid very well.

[quoteadae87939e]But did you know the government can also seize your land for private use if they can prove that doing it will serve what's called "the public good"?
Cities across the country have been using eminent domain to force people off their land, so private developers can build more expensive homes and offices that will pay more in property taxes than the buildings they're replacing.
Under eminent domain, the government buys your property, paying you what's determined to be fair market value. [/quoteadae87939e]
All of that is true and this would be considered beneficial to the public because taxes pay for alot of things. It may not be right but under the law it isnt illegal. Im sure they will get a decent settlement and if they dont then they can sue and take it back into the courts. /me wishes he has his law books with him we discussed this last week i could give you examples of cases regrading this from the past usually citizens lose

i just read more about it and it seems the courts are very divided on this issue it came down to a 5-4 vote and the dissent was very strong. I actually agree with the dissenters since by them doing this it opens the door across the country for big business to run over citizens in eminit domain. Not a good decision it will be overturned in the next land trial whenever that will be roll

lol, yeah thats what I was thinking when I read that. When was the last time these "aristocrats" voted in any way other than the way their state voted? Yes I agree the system is outdated, but it is currently working. And we are a republic not a democracy, we elect others to make our decisions.
