Well I turned 17 on wednesday, and yeah this Saturday I have an appointment to do my driving test for my license. Don't ask why I didn't get it when I was 16 it's a long story. But anyway, I was wondering what advice anyone may have for me. Mainly Californians because I'm not sure how they grade in different states.

Why didn't you get it when you were 16?

I figured YOU'D be the one to ask, smartass but I am too so it's okay.

My mom made me wait till I was 15 1/2 then I tried, didn't know shit. Failed the test for my permit, then I waited all the way until December 2004 to try again, I'm not sure why I waited...I just did (btw I passed the test if you didn't catch that). So now I have to wait 6 months for a license. So That would be the 18th, therefore I have an appointment the 18th.

I got mine when i was 16 )... Just know where the fucking blinkers are, always use them, always stop BEFORE a stop sign and not even an inch after one, stop slowly; dont slam on the brakes, ummm and shit like that. I've never had a license test cuz i took drivers ed.

My driving school teacher said you can get your learners permit online in California. Is that true or was he full of shit? Good luck!

I have a story similar to yours. Took the learner's test the day I turn 16 (was too lazy to get it before then for some reason). I failed since I didn't read anything and didnt really know things about how many feet to stop infront of railroad tracks, stupid shit like that. Anyways, 3 weeks later after i've studied the handbook, I pass the learner's test no problem. Fast foward a year or two later, I lose my wallet with the learner's. Fast foward another year, I finally go and get a replacement (at the time I was 18), but don't take the tests for the real DL. Been driving alone with that up until now. Now 19 and am finally going to take the driving/written test on the 28th of this month. Couldve just kept driving with the learners but I heard they crack down on you really hard (atleast in FL) if they catch you driving alone with your learner's (something like waiting a year before you get your license). According to the Florida DMV website, this is what they look for during a driving test, of course YMMV depending on states

[quote38e524681a]You will be expected to perform the following maneuvers on the driving test

turn about - Turn your car around in a 30' to 40' space
shift gears - Change gears smoothly and correctly (if your car has a manual shift transmission).
approach of crossing - Get in the proper lane and look in each direction. Change gears smoothly and correctly (if your car has a manual shift transmission).
observe right-of-way - Allow pedestrians to cross, pull over and stop for emergency vehicles and do not enter an intersection when you will interfere with other traffic.

straight-in parking - Park your vehicle inside the parking space straight-in. When properly parked, the vehicle should be centered, inside the space with no part of the vehicle extending out in the traffic lane. This maneuver gives the examiner the opportunity to observe your ability to

a) handle the vehicle in close quarters
b) judge distance
c) maintain control of the vehicle as you turn into a straight-in parking space

stop quickly - Drive at 20 miles per hour and make a quick, safe stop when the examiner instructs you.
backing - Back for a distance of 50 feet at a slow speed. Do not use the rear-view mirror when backing. Look to the rear instead.
obey stop signs - Give the proper signal if turning, approach in the proper lane, come to a complete stop before reaching the pedestrian crosswalk or stop line, and remain stopped until you can move safely without interfering with cross traffic.
obey traffic signals - Get into the proper lane and approach the light at a speed that will allow you to stop if the light should change. When you must stop, stop before the pedestrian crosswalk or stop line. When the light turns green, do not move forward until the other traffic has cleared the intersection. Give the correct signal for stopping and turning. Watch for "no turn"and "one way" signs.
signal and turn - Get into the proper lane and signal your turn for the last 100 feet. You may use either hand signals or mechanical signals. Slow before reaching the crosswalk and turn into the proper lane.
passing - Always look ahead and behind to make sure you can pass safely. Pass on the left, unless the car ahead is about to make a left turn or is in the left turn lane on a street with more than one lane in each direction. Do not pass on the shoulder (side of the road).
stay in proper lane - Drive in the right lane except on a one-way street. Do not change lanes until you may do so safely.
follow at a safe distance - Do not drive too closely behind other cars. Use the Two Second Rule
use proper posture - Keep both hands on the steering wheel and do not rest your elbow in the window. [/quote38e524681a]

The process for a permit is, you have to complete drivers ed, sign up for behind-the-wheel training, then go to the dmv and have proof you've signed up for the training, take the written test, get your permit then drive 6 hours with an intructor. Now you can take drivers ed online, maybe that's what your teacher meant. I did it, it's fucking easy as hell.

I got my permit first try, no problem. It was basically just an info test with stupid questions like "What color canes (sp?) signify blind pedestrians?" p Then on my first license test I failed because I couldn't paralell park to save my life. That's the first thing they make you do and you don't even do anything else if you can't do that. So second time around I practiced it and went to another testing location with less pricks as judges. And got it )

They don't make you do that here, at least everyone who told me said you don't.

I'm in southern california - took my test just about 6 months ago. I failed it the first time for a "dangerous maneuver" - I went into a right-turn lane when there was a biker 100ft behind me (?).

Anyway, second time, the lady was much nicer. Just take deep breaths, take everything slowly, and don't be nervous. She took me through school zones and a huge construction area where there was only one lane (for both directions) and I still did OK.

Like comppimp I also put off getting my license until about a month ago when I finally did drivers ed. Earlier today I went and took the road test for the second time (I couldn't parallel yesterday) and got it no problem. I'm now gonna get some sushi as a reward. Good luck tomorrow.

where I live in ca they all give the same exact test. The hardest thing they make you do is pull onto the side and reverse 3 car lengths. The hard thing is if you hit the curb its auto fail. -)

I took my test in my caravan. On the parallel parking part, I just said screw it and didn't even try. I had my hair colored blue and spiked all over. I think the old lady was scared to not pass me. I have my liscence picture with my hair like that.

I thought about that too, the car size, thats why i'm taking a little 97' Tercel to the test. If I can't parrallel park with that.....

Maybe I should rent a Geo Metro? P

in canada all i had to do was drive around town for 20 minutes and then back into a parking space.

i failed my first time since someone got into an accident in front of me (i wasn't even involved) and i "didn't get have a proper test" so they refunded my money and told me to come back in 2 weeks.

I passed! mrgreen It was pretty easy, I only got -2 out of a possible -15 because I signalled too early and another I didn't do a traffic check. But besides that he said I was outstanding.

Didn't do a traffic check? You mean before turning? And how far away were you when you signaled too early?
