im not really into the stereotypical rap (bitches, ho's, money, guns, cars etc.) im more into the streets or the roots kinda rap/hip hop.

there was a thread about alternative hip hip a couple of weeks ago but nobody recommended anything for me to actually get or listen to.

theysayjump

oh no i know...i do like outkast mainly cos they are talented, can play instruments, their music is/can be different and instead of most rap it seems like they actually give a shit about the music and not just making money.

Yes, it's mine. You install a plugin for your audio player and every time you play a track it tells that website. The website then generates graphs and whatnot to show what tracks/artists/genres/whatever you most commonly listen to. It can also match you with 'musical neighbors' who have similar taste. Pretty neat.

I did kinda like Disturbed when the album first came out (2000?). I even still have it on my ipod. Haven't listened to it in over 3 years. They are pretty lame now.
As far as Tool, buy everything they have. They are in my top 5 bands. Fav. songs are stinkfist, 46 and 2, sober. If you are new, the most radio freindly album is Lateralus.

i think you would like Slipknot also

Bright Eyes!

Uh... I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning is probably my favorite album. Next is Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground.

Digital Ash in a Digital Urn is probably the least accessible of the three. I didn't like it for a long time.

Also, another Arcade Fire fan here, and I've been known to listen to The Shins and The Thrills from time to time, too.

I also thought I hated jazz until I heard and bought A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. I'm not a jazz expert or anything but its got a really cool history and isn't as annoying as I used to think. There are so many different forms so you need to find what you dig the most. Country makes me want to stab my fucking ear drums out, though. Damn, I hate it so much. Anyway, go buy Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth if you haven't already.

I listen to a lot of different types of rap and hip-hop, but if you're looking a for some new sounds outside of mainstream, overhyped rap (which from what you're saying it seems like you are), here's a few artists you might want to check out

J-Live
Aesop Rock
Common
GZA from Wu-Tang
Atmosphere
Pharoahe Monch
Diverse
Hieroglyphics

All of these should be pretty easy to find and will be far enough removed from the extremes of the super-underground and mainstream scenes that you'll be pleasantly surprised. Good quality stuff without being overly boisterous or ridiculous.

I live in the heart of hardcore music Matt8789.

Freehold, New Jersey.

We got it all. Name any hardcore band, they came from Jersey.

Unfortunately, clearerchannel40 came from Jersey too. He also is in a town that is a 30 minute drive away.

Anyway
Disturbed Disgusting nu metal. Garbage
Dream Theater Every member has a degree in musical theory for their instruments, they are by far one of the most talented bands on the planet.
Tool very talented.

Want some good albums
Straight Outta' Compton - NWA
Mediocre Generica - Leftover Crack
Bitches Brew - Miles Davis
It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
Farewell Andromeda - John Denver
Quah - Jorma Kaukomen

Anything besides
Mariah Carey
U2
Eminem

Best of You is probably one of the weaker songs on the album. My girlfriend is a huge Foo Fighters fan and she was a bit disappointed the first time she heard it. If you didn't know, it's a double album with one CD being electric and the other being acoustic. I am actually very surprised at how good it is. Check out DOA and Virginia Moon if you want a preview.

I'm sorry I'm a little late on this, but Lateralus is their most radio friendly? Are you kidding me? The average song length is 6 minutes, and that's only because of the two segues (EBA and Mantra). If you're looking for radio friendly Tool, search the first 3 albums. If you're looking for progressive metal/art rock that kicks ass and will probably go down as one of the best rock albums ever, THEN check out Lateralus.

Some of your musical tastes disgust me. It's a very very sad state of affairs in that business right now, and you're only supporting it. Thank you to the many more of you here who have mentioned very good bands.

Oh, and as for my own music tastes, it's pretty diverse, even though it spans pretty much only rock.

Here's my top 5 bands in no particular order
Dream Theater (every member doesn't have a degree in music, but every member is a virtuoso of their respective instruments and they are widely regarded as the best progressive metal band. every single member is considered one of the top 5 in his field in the world)

Nine Inch Nails (nothing too special musically, but lyrically Trent Reznor is a genius)

Tool (went from metal to progressive metal to prog/art rock. ALWAYS very insightful, deep, meaningful lyrics)

The Dillinger Escape Plan (hardcore/noise band. they are also virtuosos, but use their instruments in completely different ways. namely, chaotic ways. they reportedly write the music to their songs where it's almost impossible to play and spend months learning how to play it)

The Mars Volta (uncategorizable. best described as progressive-punk. (yeah, I know they're typically polar opposites). very experimental, distortion-laden sound. very skilled instrumentalists, and a singer that puts Geddy Lee to shame. check out the song "Drunkship of Lanterns" if you're unsure of them)

Other favorite hardcore bands
Atreyu (melodic, dualing vocals)
Alexisonfire (melodic dualing vocals)
Error (hardcore/electronic "supergroup" featuring Dillinger lead singer)
From Autumn To Ashes
Burn in Silence (more grindcorey, harsher vocals)
Converge (VERY brutal, screamed vocals)
Darkest Hour (incredible band with a new shred-style guitarist)
Glassjaw
In Flames (percussive-attack based)
Mindless Self Indulgence (electronic hardcore. very distinctive singer [his name is Jimmy Urine])
The Refused (hardcore with electronic influences)
Screams of Erida (insanely good band of 6 that formed after 3 of Boston's finest hardcore bands broke up. consists of 3 GUITARISTS!!! harsher vocals)
The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower (screamed vocals, but with an VERY distinctive jazzy influences. they aren't afraid to bring in the horn section)
The Rise (jazzy/electronica inspired hardcore a la The Refused)
UnderOATH (a tragic story. they lost their original screamer and went soft. latest album blows ass, third album is alright, first two DEFINITELY CHECK OUT! if they continued in the fashion of their first two they would be one of my favorite bands)

Whoever was wanting to know about rappers who have substance
Sage Francis (socially conscious rapper. very mellow beats, but this fucker has FLOW. you will be impressed by him if you think rap doesn't take talent)
Saul Williams (formerly a slam poet. very similar to Sage Francis, even their voices sound alike)
Jurassic 5 (troupe of rappers, very good, catchy beats)
Tupac (I shouldn't even need to explain this--most socially-conscious rapper ever)
Ludacris (yeah, I know, he's a bling bling type rapper. but he's damn good at it. he has great flow, and it seems like every song he is featured in makes it instantly better)
50 Cent's first album ONLY
Black Eyed Peas
and of course Outkast, as someone already mentioned. they're in a class of their own
Eminem (if you're not easily offended, he has some incredible lyrics. not to mention that his flow is better than 99% of black rappers)

Metal/Alternative
30 Seconds to Mars
A Perfect Circle
Apocolyptica (cello quartet doing Metallica covers. dare I say better than the originals?)
Bloodhound Gang (typical metal, but with VERY clever comedic lyrics delivered in a hip-hop fashion)
Chevelle
Coheed and Cambria (progressive rock. they're doing a total of 5 albums that cover a single story. very good music, too, almost a dueling guitar sound)
Coldplay
Deftones (very spacey rock, but that doesn't mean they can't be heavy. singer can go from a shrieking scream to a soothing melody in a single breath)
Incubus (went from funk to alternative to all kinds of in betweens. evolve a different sound each album)
Lost Prophets
Marilyn Manson (his Antichrist Superstar was a masterpiece, despite whatever you want to say about him)
Mudvayne (incredible low end [bass and drums])
Muse (one of the best bassists around, not to mention a very good band overall)
Ours (sound like an American Muse)
Radiohead (another one of those bands that evolve every album. went from indie to alternative to progressive to ambient/experimental to a combination of all of them)
Sevendust (metal band with a black singer, which lends them a very unique sound)
Slipknot
System of a Down
The Postal Service (electronic driven melodic rock)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (female singer, guitarist and a drummer, no bass. very interesting sound)

Electronic/Techno
Squarepusher (you have to hear this shit to believe it)
ARC (SomethingAwful owner Rich Kyanka's side project)
Hallucinogen
Enigma (Gregorian/ambient/trance)
Art of Trance (trance)
Astral Projection (trance)
Boards of Canada (very eerie, scary-to-listen to ambient)
Chemical Brothers
Looking Glass Studios - System Shock 2 soundtrack (goes from high energy techno to ambient-creepiness)
Lords of Acid
Anything by Photek (world's premier Drum & Bass remixer)
Requiem for a Dream soundtrack

Other/Uncategorizable
Bright Eyes
Jewel
Liquid Tension Experiment (instrumental super group. half of Dream Theater in it)
any soundtrack to a "wuxia" movie (Hero, Crouching Tiger, those types of movies)
Johnny Cash
Tenacious D

For music news, i always check nme.com cos it has alot of news before most other sites do, they also get a shitload of exclusive interviews.

i also like Muse...my wife LOVES them!

theyve been around for about 6 years now, and since their 1st single, theyve been getting better and better....im not sure how long people in the states have known about them cos their american label dropped them (either just before or after their 2nd album) so they may have disappeared for a while.

British Sea Power
The Futureheads
The Concretes
The Stands
The Zutons

to name but a few.

20-06-2005 15:41:03

lol.....matt bellamy (the singer, songwriter, guitarist) is a fuckin amazing guitarist...probably one of the best in the world...and thats no exaggeration. im interested to see where they will go with their next album....each album of theirs has been different, just like radiohead.....and thats another thing, i dont see why they keep getting compared to radiohead...their 1st album maybe, but after that they sound nothing like them.

ben laden

20-06-2005 15:48:36

It's all about Matt. He has a high range, and he sings in a falsetto so much, just like Thom Yorke, so people automatically think "Radiohead!"
Same thing happened with this band called Earshot being compared to Tool a few years ago. Earshot's just a generic shitty metal band......actually now that I think about it their singer didn't sound anything like Maynard, so I don't know where the hell the comparisons came from.

And I'm not trying to be a douche bag, but I haven't heard any guitar work from Bellamy that would qualify him as "one of the best in the world." He's damn good, and solid especially as the band being a cohesive unit, but when you compare him to John Petrucci, who is widely regarded as one of the best guitarists alive, he doesn't really stack up. If you have any suggestion of Muse songs for me to listen to that will change my mind, though, let me know. And if you want to check out John Petrucci, check out Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift. Or AIM me, I'll send it to you. it's abso-fucking-lutely insane.

theysayjump

20-06-2005 15:59:51

i shouldve been more specific. im sure there are guitarists out there better than matt, but i meant in the "mainstream" music industry. my bad.

obviously i cant comment on him being the best since i havent heard every single guitarist in the world but from what i have heard id put him up in the top 5.

a few muse songs that i can think of at the moment would be stokholm syndrome, plug in baby and new born......there are others but i cant think of them off the top of my head at the moment.

50 Cent prior to his first album... all his mixtapes were hot

Jayz is still murder whenever he gets on a track

BIG is still the Goat

The Game --- "Higher" is a good song

Jadakisss -- Best lyricist in the game

Fat Joe --- becoming much much better

Kanye West - 1st album was classic

Nas old shit .. but hes fallling off

Wu tang Clan -- old shit

Ya so what I'm into east coast rap more than anything

Not to into that Sage Francis or any other underground ish right now. Figure if an artist is goodenough then hell become famous anyways... ie Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-z were all underground rappers at one point.

Big up to Garth Brooks.. Yeah right

Oh yeah my office manager is out of town so Im able to bs all day. Yippie

I agree with most of your additions good2speed. Sage Francis is actually coming out of the underground though. His "group" The Non Prophets got signed to Epitaph (a punk label, I know, wtf?) and he's been coming out with albums steadily. It doesn't matter if he's underground or not, you should definitely check his album "Healthy Distrust" out, it's incredible. If you need any song suggestion, I'd suggest "Sea Lion," "Gunz Yo," "Escape Artist," "Crumble," and "Slow Down Gandhi."

Funny thing is Im from Ny and grew up rapping on the streets of NY. I work in oregon and one of the artist who did a show out here was Sage. This guy I met even gave me tickets to go check him out at the University of oregon. I went to the Hall he was performing at met some people who smoked weed got some wed off them and never went to go see the performance. Guess Im too influenced by hype and media. I'll prolly need him to drop an industry prodcued album to even listen to him. Butif I ddo find him on the net iLL GIVE HIM A LISTEN SINCE you recomendd him so highly.
