Why don't you just post the problem you're having? I may be able to help... and if not, maybe someone else can?

ok, This is my first time on linux... i've tried searching google, but i dont really know how to phrase what i need...

I just installed MythTv and it's up and running fine. I installed it using

http//www.mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html

It basically did everything for me... i installed it on an old 20 gig drive... it formatted it for me and installed linux and then myth tv... I then rebooted and plugged in my 200 gig drive that has my media on it...

I know where to put in the location of the media in mythtv, but i dont know what format linux uses for the path... to tell you the truth, i can't even figure out if it SEES my damn drive.

So my question is, how do i tell if it sees my harddrive (bios sees it), how do i tell if it sees my dvd drive (bios sees it as well), how do i find out what drive letter (if thats how linux handles it) has been assigned (I dont know how many different partitioned it made when formatting)...

Do i make any sense here? I'm fairly good with windows... i've been wanting to try out linux for quite a time, and mythtv is my excuse...

Yeah, I understand what you're saying.

Linux assigns paths for the drives like this /dev/hda, /dev/hdb, etc... You might have seen this when you installed Linux. To find this path for your 200G, the easiest way is to boot with the drive connected and try to catch what linux says in its boot sequence. There should be a line saying that it sees a hard drive, and is mounting it to /dev/hdx where x is whatever it decides to assign based on your setup. Your install HD should be /dev/hda/ assuming it's IDE not SCSI. Your DVD also be something like /dev/hdx but may have symbolic links to it like /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd if your linux install did this for you.

For the hell of it, just try to mount /dev/hdb (might be your 200Gig) to one of your directories and 'cd' to it. (Googling should tell you how, given the numerous linux sites out there, if you don't know how to do this.) If you see all your stuff, you're all set!

All your file system settings are in /etc/fstab. Does your install come with any file managers? If so, you should run it to see what it sees.

Linux can work with NTFS (might have to add support if the myth installation doesn't add it by default - http//linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/ntfs.html) so your HD format should not matter. If you're connecting the HD directly via IDE then you should be fine. If using external, it should be fine too as long as the device adapter has linux support.

i watched the linux boot screen and it says my other hard drive is hdc... which makes sense since its the primary master... anyone able to help me on aim/msn?

I dislike aim since it forcefully installs a media player called viewpoint (check your program files directory i bet it's there).

I'll give you 5 minutes on ym

I use Ubuntu Linux, running Kernel 2.6.12, Gnome 2.11 and Xorg. I 100% recommend Ubuntu. Get it here

www.ubuntulinux.org

I know a fair amount about Linux. I can help you out, just AIM me.
