Cold sores ARE caused by herpes. Herpes simplex 1 that is... not herpes simplex 2, which is genital herpes, or what most people think of when they think of herpes. Something like 80+% of the population is infected with some type of herpes though and most people do not show symptoms. HS1 is common and not a big deal generally.
