i got my tax return today....all $661 of it D i got it unexpectedly since i filed it the day before it was meant to be at the IRS. i was told it would take 8 weeks since i filed so late.....and it wasnt an e-file either it was snail mail.

any ideas on how i could spend it?

and not like $661 can buy 1200 mousepads, 18 very expensive forks and shit like that.

im looking at newegg.com D

Nice! Taxman took 200 from me evil

How bout investing it to buy refs and finish a few sites? I like the forks idea though.

Hmmm. If you're looking at newegg you probably want electronics. I think I'd buy a DV camera, or possibly upgrade my treo 600 to the 650. But thats just me.

Investment is alawys a good idea

theysayjump

01-05-2005 01:23:49

yeah im keeping some of it for refs to finish a couple of sites im looking for but it looks as though im going to have to UP the price i was offering people initially......id like to put some of it, if not all of it towards something "decent" but i cant think what.......

what kind of investment compfreak?

Since youre looking at newegg. Do you game alot on your comp? And what are the current specs of your comp?

If you're looking for new silveware, check this out. I bought one a few months ago and it was well worth the money.

lmao oh shit....im getting one!

yeah i game and my specs are

pentium 4 3.0ghz, 512 DDR RAM, 120GB WD HDD, 128MB nvidia video card, shit motherboard (foxconn). onboard soundcard..

the machine runs great, no problems running games like hidden and dangerous 2, medal of honour, morrowind, call of duty.....i havent tried doom 3 or half life 2 since theyre not my kinda games.

those are the standards to test whether your comp is decent, i believe.

i put a ton of cash towards refs.. it pays off, big time.

Id put a little of that to at least getting 1gb of ram, makes it so much nicer in general, not just for gaming

theysayjump

01-05-2005 10:34:16

yeah thats what i was thinking......crucial, corsair or geil i was gonna go for. and like i said i am putting money towards refs but nobody is taking up my offer (on my trade thread).

Investment as of now would probably be referrals, cause its not enough for the stock market nor real estate.

Upgrading your computer could also be a investment given you use it for business. wink

If you really have a few hundred to blow then get this

A64 3200+ socket 939
Asus motherboard (dont have a model sorry)
another stick of the same ram, to total 1gb

I dont really like western digital but meh if its holding up i guess you should keep it. Also 128 nvidia dosent tell us much, is it a 5900xt? or 5200 ultra? Etc?

theysayjump

01-05-2005 10:46:12

yeah i know i couldnt remember the model number for the nvidia card....im not too keen on WD either but it came with the computer and its worked fine so i didnt see any need to change it, i was maybe gonna go with samsung or maxtor though. i didnt even think about a new motherboard...hmm....and i think another stick of RAM is a probably a given.

01-05-2005 10:47:14

If you don't game a lot your computer is fine.

If you are getting a PSP or something from a free website then leave ~$100 aside for games or accessories or something.

The motherboard hes a lot in terms of stability and performance, i no longer cheap out and buy crappy motherboards since its essential to having a good one. Dont get maxtor, my recommend brands (i do not know much about samsung so its not included)

1. Seagate
2. Hitachi

Though if i was told to add in samsung it would be below seagate, cuase seagate is

1. The quietest
2. 5 year warranty

theysayjump

hmm....i completely forgot about seagate...i remember hearing good things about them on newegg.com.

how much does a decent motherboard go for?

theysayjump

02-05-2005 22:29:02

i have used some of the money to put towards a title transfer and insurance i a car i got for my wife, i also got my wife some decent headphones for her ipodshuffle and a little fountain from amazon......ive also used some for refs and bought a dvd from the UK called Big Train and a 512MB stick of geIL RAM from newegg.com.

still got quite a bit left too D

any other comp upgrades you guys can think of?

Is your CPU a northwood or a prescott? Meh but if you wanna upgrade your cpu to a64 that would be a tight upgrade wink

Whats your FSB? Catche? Its been a while but i think the 533fsb and under are the northwood while the 800fsb are the prescott.

well i checked my order from when i bought my PC and its 2 CPU's,pentium 4 800FSB. i think the cache is either 1MB or 512kb

Its a prescott, eeks that not that great, the prescott has a higher catche (1MB) But that part is ruled out by the longer pipelines, the northwood beats the prescott until you start reading the 3.6ghz+ range. Meh, if its enough power for you keep it, if not spend $300 and get a AMD motherboard and a 3200+ A64

well ill see what the machine runs like when i put the other stick of RAM in.....it runs really well at the moment except for sometimes apps and games pay take a little longer to open or close.

are they worth spending that much money on? will i see a considerable difference, or is the difference not worth the price?

probably not worth the price for now, but when more software start taking advantage of the a64 system it will become worth it. Depends on how you use your computer. If you need the power for gaming/encoding stuff and such yes its 100% needed, but if you just do surfing/music/word/excel then you dont need it. Really up to you. Which ram are you getting?

theysayjump

i bought that, its pricer, but then again im a brand whore, i cant get the 2-3-2-6 timings though cause kingston dosent like my motherboard. Currently running at 2.5-3-3-8 timings. The Geli ram your getting is value ram in terms of its timings, but if your on a budget that should do, also take a look at some corsair value ram, they are virtually the same price, except corsair is the #1 brand.

theysayjump

03-05-2005 00:52:05

yeah it was between geil and corsair, but since i dont know much about RAM, i went with geil since they had more reviews and they were all 5 stars (lol kinda childish i know). maybe ill remove my stock RAM and buy some value corsair RAM.

what are these timings? i saw shit like that when i was looking for my RAM but had no idea what to look for or what it even referred to.

its referring to how fast the ram can respond, so basically lower is better. The first 3 digits are the most important.

2-2-2-5 is extreame already, hard to obtain though without overclocking, and you probably need to spend like 250+ to even get a 1gb of that stuff. But i would say something around 2-3-2-6 (but if you dont care it dosent really matter, a bit of improvement, not to much though)
