Admin, thanks for the many upgrades that you have done over the past weeks. I especially love the RSS feeds as I have now moved most of my viewing over to FeedBurner.

Is there any way to publish an RSS feed for Private Messages?

Thanks!

http//www.webreference.com/authoring/languages/xml/rss/intro/

RSS is the mechanism which is used to deliver a majority of the Podcasts that are out on the internet. Works like this

1. Someone publishes a web page with some sort of info (i.e. blogs, forums, etc) and configures an RSS feed.
2. You configure a news aggregator to check the RSS feed every so often. Everytime an update has been published, the aggregator will download the updates and display through the GUI.

You can also configure Podcast aggregators to do the same with audio files. They will automatically download files as they are published by many of the podcasters around the world. Podcasting is essentially "Do It Yourself Radio" where anyone can create content and make it available to others. Regardless of the name, you don't need an iPod to listen. You can use your PC, another MP3 player, PDA, etc. Although, most of the aggregators can import directly into iTunes --- and your iPod.

In my case, I plug in my iPod every night before I go to bed. During the night, my aggregator will download all show updates and publish to iTunes (and the iPod). The next morning I have new content to listen to on the way to work. There are some good tech-related podcasts (i.e. Slashdot Review, Leo Laporte, etc) that beat the hell out of local garbage talk shows.

With that said... I also use the RSS feed (via the XML links on the main page) for the forums. Every so often, all I have to do is open my aggregator (FeedDemon) and it will display a newspaper style report of all the new forums posts. You can look at them individually or you can view them within the same view. If you click links, they are opened normally in your default browser.

The benefit to RSS is not when you use it for a single site. But rather when you have a bunch of sites (i.e. CNN, NBC, TechTV, blah, blah, blah) that you look through each day. If you use an aggregator, you only have to look in one place --- your PC. The aggregator will do all of the work for you.

Hope that helps....

I tried.
http//forum.freeipodguide.com/pm_rss.php

It works, but the problem is that the PM data is accessed by login session. So it works if you click the link and load the page in firefox or IE, but once you load it into an aggregator, it fails to load (obviously) since there's no sid and cookie set on the aggregator (don't think there can be). I think you might be able to set it up if you use some clever wget scripting with your cookie and sid from a browser session, but even then it's pretty useless, since you have to repost that wget'd file back on a web server for your aggregator to read.

Short version I tried, but I don't know how to make standard http auth work with phpbb. I mean, the passwords are md5'd in the dbase... figuring that out is over my head.

WAHOO! I NAILED IT!

Combining code from the PM export hack installed and the existing rss mod, I created a script that grabs the latest 10 received PMs and formats them to comply with rss standards AND uses http auth to allow an "rss session" which makes phpbb happy.

That was tough. I like challenges. Enjoy the PM RSS feed.

I've got the following error when I click on the XML link within my PM mailbox. Not sure if it's me or not.

[quote89adbe7412]The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

BTW, I'm always glad to offer up a challenge. It's very nice to see a site admin who really tries to meet the needs of his users. Props, karma, and all that good stuff!

Might have been a temporary error. I can't reproduce anything like that in either firefox or IE.

This is tested and working on my account and a non-privledged test account, as well as several other mods. Clear cache/cookies and try it again? Also, try it in your RSS aggregator.

Edit make sure you aren't dropping the "?login" at the end. It wont work without that.

I noticed something about getting RSS on the PSP. Can somebody explain or link me to an explanation of how to do this. That would be cool to get some of the forum feeds on the PSP.

Bump. I don't see how this works with aggregators if it needs a username/pass.

How about allowing

http//forum.freeipodguide.com/pm_rss.php[b13ebba5ab7]&user=1&pass=2[/b13ebba5ab7] or something similar?
