Are you kidding? We've seen AIM conversations with you and you completely flip out on people. I can't imagine how your customer service would be, and you seem QUITE young and immature at that. Don't take this as an offense, but I don't think you should be running a free site.

clearestchannel40

19-04-2005 16:54:06

Well, I am a bit shocked to find that you see one conversation, err, half a conversation with another user on a bad day and decided to generalize. I maintain a very patient and upbeat disposition and believe that my age should not play a role in my determination.

Now please, can somebody inform on how I may go about starting my own site.

PodTopia

Once again, sorry to disappoint you, but age does maintain a barrier. Plan on telling your parents? Taxes??? Getting checks?? You've got to consider everything. And, if you were resourcefule nough to start your own site, you wouldn't be asking about it in a post, you'd find the information on your own.

FSRS.net[=http//www.fsrs.net]FSRS.net is where you want to go to read up on it. Do yourself a favor and read pretty much every post in their forum.

Archon810

19-04-2005 17:06:14

haha, age plays a critical role here. If you are below 20, I won't even look at your site, and I beg you not to start it. Otherwise, you can't handle it alone, you need a team and initial capital.

PodTopia

19-04-2005 17:07:35

Thank you Archon. If you didn't notice, the most successful sites out there are those that work full-time. Gratis, OC, and CooBro all staff their sites ALL DAY as their full time jobs. You'll notice sites like Cool4Free are good when they're small, but they get overwhelmed when many people join. With you as the only person, and homework, tests, and quizzes to do, you don't stand a chance. Startup capital's a major issue too. I've stopped doing sites without startup capital.

clearestchannel40

19-04-2005 17:11:04

I would like to inform all of the above that I plan on starting with a budget of $1000 and preordering the items of my choosing. I also have initiated plans to assemble a well rounded team of determined individuals. If you believe that because of my age, that my site shall be any less legit, then I will hate to see you pass it by. I believe that age should play a miniscule role in running a home-based business, its the quality of the customer service and the appealing offers that will attract consumers, not my age. As we all now, It is maturity and responsibility that keep these sites alive, not a number ;)

clearestchannel40

19-04-2005 17:19:12

Nothing to say, eh? Well, I await a witty rebuttal.

Thank You Armstrong, I appreciate your help.

Archon810

19-04-2005 17:29:07

I will try to stay away from any "homebased" businesses. if you dont have an office and LLC or similar next to your name, forget about people trusting you. There are too many "startups" like this out there and this won't last long.

clearestchannel40

19-04-2005 17:31:31

If you say so, understood.

Archon810

19-04-2005 17:34:07

also, $1000 is 4 ipods. that's miniscule compared to what it should be.

Do any of these companies open with a huge startup cost? It seems like all the little ones wait til they get their first checks from the referral companies before they start shipping. Then all the startup cost there is would be the cost of the server and software. But I agree that you would need a staff, particularly a support staff but also someone who can access your computer to run the referral software. Then of course you have to deal with the shipping, unless it was a paypal only site (which might be cool). How old are you, do you have a car? Most shipping companies pickup, but will you be home from school in the afternoon for them to do that? Lots of things you need to consider before you blow money on a site people might not sign up for.

No offense, clearestchannel. It seems like you have relatively straightforward intentions and are taking a shine to capitalism which is always encouraging, but $1000 is not an impressive amount of money.

I could certainly be plenty wrong here as I'm no expert to how to run a "free site". But there is so much infrastructure involved that you may not even understand. You've got to find a business host that can handle high-volume bandwidth requirements, you've got to make networking contacts with business professionals that will agree to your websites terms, most likely with some pretty substantial legal requirements involved, you need someone to design your site and make sure it's functional and responsive, etc.

I'm not saying you can't do it. Far from it, I hope you do it and succeed. But you may want to step back from the idea and try to realize what all would go into it.

Good luck though,
Bryan

I think you need to find a publisher, like the Cactus thingie or Gratis has their own one.

Then, you need someone to write the code for your website; buy the computer hardware and buy bandwidth and website permissions etc.

Then, profit!

Hosting is no problem. I have my personal server box in my basement. I can run the site myself. I have 99% uptime for the last year. On top of that, who said I was going to do ipods? Ipods are played out.

i'm developing a script that will allow you to run your own system.

And, yeah you could always run FSRS. I bet the advertising publishers for the offers are just a phone call away - or you could always see what the other sites are using.

The main thing will be what your take on the free scene will be?

I'm sure everyone is sick of a freeipod. How can you attract attention in this fast becoming super-crowded market? I guess bigger, better free stuff?

Reminds me of the time I'd search the web for CDNow coupons or whatever coupons so that I could buy CDs.

That was before Napster. And, the PhP forums hadn't been so well organized.

OK, that was a threadjack!

well you also have to pay for the script which can be 100-500 depending on which one you get. But seriously a 1000$ capital is not good at all. More like 10,000$ capital, even thats not enough. If your going to start with a 1000$ capital there are going to be a lot of unhappy coustomers, probably somewhat like how gifted network started up

Agreed...you have NO business starting a free site given your experience and lack of knowledge. Also...$1000 isn't SHIT for capital for to cover startup costs/preorder items...I could shit $1000 if I squeezed hard enough

How about 5DollarBills4Free.com? Since you have all of your infrastructure needs covered, your initial investment will address the first 200 customers.

You could even work offers with Amway, the Branch Davidians, the People's Temple, Heaven't Gate, or some other "cult" group so that your customers don't have to complete product trials. They could just sell over their soul, drink a "special" juice cocktail, or ride a magic space ship for a green. twisted

Kidding of course....

Good luck!

I love how the young try to boost their maturity by using bigger words than normal people use day to day.

It's not a generalization if it's true...

Ya know, alot of people on here sort of bothered me with the commentary, but I've yet to meet somebody as ignorant as yourself. You used that cliche line "Sit down and Stay Down" twice already, and you also decided to curse me out, at least others here have decency.

I also have come to senses and decided not to start a free site, although many are against me, thank you for the honesty.

I hope you know what it is you are trying to prove, because I am really clueless. You are probably the saddest person on this forum. It is okay though, I understand you must have some horrid demons in your closet, no need to expose them. How are you going to talk with your feedback? I mean, if somebody wants to research me before a trade, at least they will will find 20+ successful trades, what will they find for you? An ignorant guy with a dirty mouth and no positive feedback. I feel sorry for you, whatever you are looking for, good luck.
