Hey my report card came in the mail today, and it was just opened by my dad!

I got #2 in my Freshman Class! (This brainy chick named Diana got 4.571)

Tech. Mastery A
Honors English A+
German A+
Biology A+
Theology A+
Integrated II Math A+
American Government A+

That would be a 4.414, but because my Honors English class is weighted, I get a 5.0 averaged into my GPA for that class, equaling out to=4.543.

What this means
-Nate gets to go out to eat
-Nate receives an extra $25 in the weekly allowance
-Nate becomes more trusted
-Nate continues not to have to pay for cell phone (As long as I maintain 4.2 or better, which hasn't been too hard this year)

man... I remember being a teenager... except I didn't have a cell phone and I was working off of a 14.4k modem on America On-Line (before it was just called AOL)... $2.99 an hour for internet. those were the days...

Yeah, well I attend a prep school for the most part. Some bad asses but it's tough, really tough.

Over 99% go onto college to give you an idea of the student body.

As for the incentives, yeah they are nice, I mean my parents are really proud and everything. My mom even helps me study for my tough vocabulary quizzes (100 words, she writes the word, you write the definition).

I guess I kind of take my life for granted sometimes.

$15-$20/week

I do like 20% of our laundry, sweep the floors, clean the kitchen on days when I don't have school, cook for my younger brother, and just random things that my parents want me to do.

Yeah - maybe not loaded [we definitely are upper middle class, but don't act snobby, I swear], but I will have enough to pay for most of college to most schools. I'm lucky.

You ask why I do these sites? 1) They don't spoil me, I don't get things unless its Christmas or my birthday from them. 2) It's a fun hobby

You guys are making this sound like my parents are being too nice to me!

If you knew some of the people in my grade, then maybe a few of your faces would look like this shock

Example 1 A girl named Jenny in my grade got all B's = She just turned 15 1/2 , she gets new car, $500 shopping spree

Example 2 Friend of mine gets $5 for every A on any test. We have between 10-20 tests each week.

And don't even get me started with allowances, the average in my grade is probably $40/week

Wait till you get to college. I had a 3.69 cum GPA for highschool, went to college, end of freshman year had a 1.87. Getting a 0.8 on your spring semester doesn't help much.

Well... they are. wink

Relative to others, you are quite well off, I'd say. That's not to diminish your hard work, but I had four paper routes to buy my school clothes and "allowance" was a foreign word in my house.

In any case, reading this thread makes me glad that high school is over. What a bloody nightmare.

abrock124

30-03-2005 20:46:52

In high school I had a 4.356 cumulative GPA. I graduated #5 in my class of 500 students. My parents live in a $600,000 home but I never got an allowance. I got a job when i was 14 and finally saved enough money by the time i was 17 to get my own car. I feel like it taught me some responsibility. Whenever i have kids im not going to hand them everything they want. Good grades should not be rewarded that way. The real reward is the chance you are giving yourself at a better future. I will not reward my kids for good grades, I will punish them for bad ones though. I'll make sure they want the good grades for themselves and for their future, not so they can get a few extra dollars each week.

Nate you really should consider yourself lucky. I also really hope growing up this way will somehow be able to adequately prepare you for the real world. Nice job though just the same.

31-03-2005 06:07:48

Well, as one of the old guys here who has raised 3 kids -- 2 of them out in the real world now -- I'd like to say that you should consider yourself blessed. However you should also realize that the real world doesn't work that way.

I encouraged my kids to do well in school, and when they messed up they caught hell for it. I didn't pay them a set allowance per se, but gave them money to go out when they needed it (and deserved it), bought them all the clothes and shoes they needed, lots of stuff at Christmas, etc. Helped them get their own car. But I never handed them everything. They always complained as teenagers that we didn't do enough for them, that their friends had more than them. But later, as they grew into adults, they realized that many of those friends had broken homes, divorced parents, and couldn't be self-sufficient in the real world. My kids suddenly appreciated how they were raised, and tell us that now. That alone makes us more proud than anything.

I'm sure your parents mean well but I hope you understand that you are going to have to function in the real world one day without them. And you need to prepare for that now.

And I was also a top HS performer -- graduated 5th in my class, 28 on the ACT, partial scholorship to college, and that was without even trying. Thought I'd skate through college like I did HS. Nope. My first quarter I had a 3.0 GPA. My 2nd I had a 2.5 and was in danger of losing my scholorship. It was an eye-opening experience, that's for sure.

Wow, your honors classes get weighted as a 5.0? that is pretty lame, seriously. I mean no offense to you or nothing, but that makes people at schools like yours look much better. Here only the AP classes are weighted as 5.0, the honors classes are weighted too, but not that much. It makes your GPA look so much better, especially if your all honors'ed out and do good in them. Besides, freshman year is easy lol, wait till you get to your junior/senior year and you're taking all AP classes. Still not that hard if you're good at that sorta thing, but hey, harder than honors thats for sure 8)

It's changing next year = honors don't get weighted.

ap classes are 5.5 for a+ (physically impossible)

Starting this summer, I don't get allowance anymore, so I might be looking for a job I can ride my bike too.
