yeah what id do is get him to open a support ticket on his existing account, saying what happened, whats going on and what youd like to do.
as long as they know the situation and tell you its ok, then it should be ok.
i wouldnt just assume that its ok and get him to sign up, at least let them know beforehand.

As long as he has not completed an offer with the previous account, he can register.
