Time zones are strange in the forum ...

So I just noticed that in order to get the forum time to be accurate with my time zone (PST), I had to change my settings to GMT - 7, instead of being on GMT - 8 where it should be.

I just noticed that, and I find it quite odd that I have to be in the wrong time zone setting to have the right time on the forum.

I was really confused as to what happened ... lol. I looked in off-topic and didn't see my post ... and I looked in here and really couldn't remember posting it here.

Anyways, I just thought it was a strange thing that needed to be pointed out.

For some reason the server time is set to GMT-9 when it should be GMT-8, which is what the forum is set to for local time.

The server is NTP synching to get its time, I'll have to look into why it's off an hour. I thought it to be a misconfigured DST thing, but if so then it would be off another hour come time change next month.

[b1e14ddf5eb]EDIT[/b1e14ddf5eb] Should hopefully be fixed now. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

This thread finally made me go out and figure out time zone EST would be in GMT units or whatever that is supposed to mean.

And I've only been a member since 13 Oct 2005.

Thats not too long trying to figure out what time it really is.

Don't feel too bad, I didn't bother to really commit it to memory until I got my promotion a couple months back. Now I work directly, all day long, with people in London, so I have to compute the time there constantly.

I assume mtl is Montreal, so that puts you at EST, or GMT - 5.

Well Montreal is almost due north of the US's eastern coast, so that's a pretty easy assumption to make without looking up P

yeah but how did he know that it was -5?

I don't like the whole GMT. It confuses me.

I don't remember it being wrong on the last host, just since we've been on this new one. Also, before we had this dedicated host we didn't have root access to fix stuff like this anyway. It's nice when you have full control over the box. )

Having been in the military for years and traveling around the world, keeping up with GMT/UTC/ZULU time deltas is pretty much second nature to me too.

I know because I lived on the east coast for 17 years, so I was used to filling in GMT - 5 instead of EST. And Montreal is like one of the few places in Canada that I know.

I wouldn't be able to tell you the conversion necessarily for other places in the world, however.
