here is my question. I have the Wii and I have cable internet. The cable internet that I use has two possible ways to access the internet. My way is connecting a Ethernet cable to the modem to the computer, which is how I'm connect to the Internet. Now, the second way is a USB connection. Is it possible for me to connect a USB wire from the modem to the Wii console and access the internet???

This sort of question belongs in Ch-Ch-Ch-Check Yourself

... and to answer your question, No. (Unless USB Drivers are available from the manufacturer for the Wii, which is unlikely)

Just get a router from WalMart for $50 (or you can get a wired router if your strapped for cash) and hook up one Ethernet to the Wii, and one to the PC and one to the modem.

the Wii doesn't have a Ethernet slot

mpbollywoodking

So, the only way to get online with the Wii is to get a router? Because even though the Wii has WiFi, I can't find a decent wireless access point around my area "(

I thought it was pretty ridiculous that they didn't put an ethernet port on the wii. nintendo is coming out with an ethernet to usb device, most likely highly overpriced like their SD memory cards. I think you might be able to purchase any ethernet to usb device, although I haven't tried this out myself.

If the Wii can't find a wireless connection (or you don't have a wireless router), then you only have three options

1. Buy a wireless router.
2. Buy the LAN adapter for the Wii, not sure of the cost, but probably expensive.
3. Buy the USB WIFI point for the DS/Wii. It plugs into your computer and acts as a wireless access point for the Wii and DS. I think they go for around $30.

Yeah, it is pretty terrible that they didn't include a built in eternet port, though.

So, option 3 sounds pretty decent. So, i get a USB WiFi point

and plug it in a USB port on my computer, and my Wii,PSP,Laptop will pick up the signal??

What about other users around my neighborhood? Can i password protect it?

mpbollywoodking

12-02-2007 12:09:26

am I correct? I wish to get it asap, but I want to be sure. So, here is the steps.

1) I get the device. I connect to the usb port of my computer.
2) My nintendo Wii will find the access point through my computer, which has Cable Internet.

Am I correct?

zr2152

12-02-2007 12:15:04

Yes that should work. As for password protecting I think that you can only do that to a router so im not sure about that device.

If I were you I would just nvest in a lynxis (i think that how you spell it) router..all you need is a small one with not too much range if your wii is by your computer, and then you can password protect it. I feel that is the way to go to get the best speed while surfing the net.

mpbollywoodking

12-02-2007 12:21:09

but doesn't the linksys have ethernet ports? I don't have a Ethernet port on my wall nor on the Nintendo Wii, there is only a Ethernet port on the back of my cable modem and the computer

Yes. The cable goes into your modem, then you take the ethernet cable that comes with the Linksys and connect the modem ito the Linksys. Then, you can have multiple outputs (generally 4), so you can connect it to your computer again using another ethernet cable. It will work the same as before, except that you'll be able to set it up so you would have wireless, too, so the Wii would also be able to connect.

Hope this helps.

Yes. http//www.resnet.uconn.edu/images/knowledge_base/linksys-g-i1.jpg[" alt=""/imge55dfe7d4d] This is the model I use, but there are a few forms of it that work just as well. It can be found at most electronic stores, and I think they usually retail for around $45, although you could possibly get them cheaper on eBay or something.

Hope this helps.

If your computer has a wireless card, then yes.

mpbollywoodking

12-02-2007 15:47:55

is that what this is?

What that is is an access point, but it is not a wireless card in itself. It will turn your computer into the wireless point, and other devices that can detect wireless could find it and use it, but it cannot pick up a wireless signal.

Ok, so, I get the device, plug it into my computer which is running Cable Internet via through a Cable Modem, my computer becomes an access point, and my Nintendo Wii can use my computer to gain access to the Internet and stuff?

Are other users around the area able to use my access point? If so, any way to password protect it and is it secure to have my computer become an access point?

Yes. As to the encryption, I do not know personally if you can or not, however, the range is not very far, so it would not be very likely that someone else could connect. While the USB adapter seems like a good idea, I think you'd find just getting a router to be a better investment in the longrun.

kidd2108

12-02-2007 16:37:47

Heres the one I bought. It was $40 with rebate a few weeks ago.

http//www.amazon.com/Linksys-Cisco-WRT54GL-Wireless-G-Broadband-Compatible/dp/B000BTL0OA/sr=8-1/qid=1171330574/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-1035335-9596956?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I also think you should buy a wireless router. All you PC's can get a signal from anywhere inside and till a certain distance outside of your home. Plus your wii will pick up the signal as well.

zr2152

12-02-2007 21:48:19

exactly

1. Buy your linksys
2. Connect it to your computer by way of ethernet cable
3. Your wii WILL pick it up
4. You can password protect your router so that no one else can use it to access the internet
5. You can buy a wireless card for your non internet computer so that it can pick up the router.

hope that helps too. )

It's simple Plug and Play right?

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 06:50:59

Yeah, take the cord from your modem that now goes into your computer, plug it into the WAP slot, take ethernets from the 1 - 4 slots plug into your various applications and I think it has a CD to install -- or maybe just instruction guide, usually all you have to do is type in the IP of the router, user admin and admin as user/pass and tweak it from there. Make sure you put in a WPA password so no one steals your thunder.

mpbollywoodking

13-02-2007 09:12:14

Ok, here is what I did
1) The Ethernet cable that runs from the Cable Modem to the back of the computer, I took the end from the back of the computer and inserted into the routher

2) Next, I took the Ethernet cable that came with the router, I took that and connect the router (slot 1) to the back of the computer.

3) Powered both the cable modem and the router. I got no Internet connection. My firewall is allowing the router to access the Internet. Is there something that I'm doing wrong. I'm at the screen where it asks me to enter in an Admin password.

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 09:16:59

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 09:21:52

Yeah, it is just the name that appears in your wireless network box.

mpbollywoodking

13-02-2007 09:25:56

Now, it's asking me to choose WPA Personal, WPA2 Personal, WEP, or Disabled. Is this where I choose to create a password?

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 09:27:20

Yes. Make sure you chose ASCII if it asks between ASCII and Hex. Some have to be a certain number of charecters 8 or 16 if I remember correctly?

mpbollywoodking

13-02-2007 09:29:38

It gives me the WEP (64bit) or WEP (128bit) encryption. So, when my Wii tries to connect to this router, i have to enter the password into the Wii correct? Which encryption do I choose?

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 09:30:35

64bit should be fine - and yes you type the password into every device that connects to the router.

mpbollywoodking

13-02-2007 09:33:18

One more question, my speakers are making a very very very quiet staticy sound?

TryinToGetPaid

13-02-2007 09:34:34

That should not occur from you installing your router, maybe you knocked the connection loose when you were fiddling back there, try to reconnect it?

mpbollywoodking

i know why, it's because the router is close to the speakers
