I think your talking about the hard drive on the Premium Xbox 360, correct? Not some aftermarket or other item that comes seperate? If so, then yes, that's used for storing demos, trailers, themes, gamesaves, and other stuff you can download from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Yeah, I think I remember reading in one of the 360 manuals that you could take it out but I don't know how.

You don't want to take it out while it's turned on but there's a button on top, right on the front of the HD itself, and you just press that and pull up gently on the HD and it comes off.

1) I think I'll still manage to screw that up too.
2) I don't know how I'm going to be using up 12GB of space.

Hahah, yeah, you can't add anything on it through a memory card or anything unless it's like gamesaves so it's really hard to fill that up. ( Unless of course, you mod it.

So, i can only store XBOX LIVE stuff in there? How about just saving game progress from games that has nothing to do with XBOX Live??

No, I didn't mean to confuse you, haha. You can store any game saves or files from your Xbox 360 on this HD. What I meant though, is you can't transfer (for instance) a movie from a computer to your Xbox 360. The only movies/songs/themes/etc you can get on your Xbox 360 has to be through Xbox 360. The game saves do not have to involve Xbox Live in order for them to be saved.

Has the 360 been successfully modded?

Yeah, not like the Xbox but where you can load Linux but you can hack the firmware and add HD's and put illegal content on there. roll

What exactly does illegal content mean?

Emulators and games right now can be stored on your HD. For the old Xbox, they had applications and stuff but you can't do that with the 360... yet.

At the moment, all you can do is hack the DVD firmware to play backup games..

Though a reputable and credible source found out a way to run Avalaunch and XBMC on the XBOX 360.. However, information on how to do this hasn't been released. But apparently the Xbox-Scene admin/moderators trust the source.
