How does karma work, and does it do anything?

Karma is applied to someone when a user feels like they are being informative or helping them out by posting something that they need or help them understand something. It really doesn't do anything except signify that person is helpful. )

Karma can be given for any reason you see fit, whether it be someone helped you out, completed a successful trade with you, made you laugh, made you cry.
It's not a reflection of how good or bad a trader is, it's just a "fun" feature that was added.

You can give karma to whoever you want, whenever you want, but you can only give it once every 6 hours.
