is there a "new replies to your posts" or something so we dont have to go around digging for old topics to see if we got responses?

Yes when you post in a thread, right above the Preview/Submit button is a checkbox that reads "Notify me when a reply is posted". I'm not sure if it e-mails you or PMs you, but it looks like what you are looking for.

It sends you an email. Also at the bottom of every thread, on the left, there is a link that says Watch this Topic for Replies, which does the same thing without you having to respond to the thread.
