Yes, you need a credit card.
Credit cards use is protected by US Laws. If something you didn't buy shows up there then you just ask for a chargeback. How can it not be safe?

Yeah, most of the offers are pretty reputable. If you're really paranoid about that sort of thing, or maybe someone else you know is reluctant to use theirs, you might be able to look into getting a prepaid visa or mastercard. As far as I know, they look and work just like normal cards with the exception that they only have a certain amount of cash on them. (kind of like gift cards)
