well the antennaon it is very good...i just happen to be far (like 3-5miles) from any wireless networks. The comp still picks them up...just doesnt have more then 1 bar of signal. My roomates lappy with same wireless doesnt pick any up at all.

Nice laptop. I may have enough greens on monday. I'm stil deciding over the Averatec P4 Notebook or Athlon Notebook. I'm kind of torn since the Averatec P4 Notebook has a pretty big screen, fast cpu and decent graphics card but the athlon one is much more portable and has a lot better battery life.

Lunarpancake

07-03-2005 00:24:16

actually ive read it doesnt have much better bat life.

if ur gunna game with any semi-new games....choose the pentium.

if your looking for true laptop features (portability....lightness...etc etc) choose the AMD

or take the 1000$ and throw in ur own 500$ give or take and buy one you want

Tholek

07-03-2005 00:49:03

The Pentium is [bb4286402e4]NOT[/bb4286402e4] a mobile processor, is not made for the laptop, and will drain the battery more.

The RADEON video is the P4HT's main selling point, but I don't think it's enough to top the AMD.

Lunarpancake

07-03-2005 01:42:47

Yes i understand its not made for lappies, but the fact is the AMD guzzles batt aswell, check reviews and forums both lappies have average batt live of 2.5-3hours max

Tholek

07-03-2005 05:28:40

Sorry, I meant that for "the masses". D

Yeah, both suck on battery life, but the AMD will probably last a few minutes more ;)

[quoteb6f22b8269="J@ck@l"]How is the laptop because i am not sure which one to choose. I like the HP one. D Congrats by the way.[/quoteb6f22b8269]

I haven't even come close to getting all my referrals on this one, but the last one I'd recommend is the HP. Note the little popup info box says that it's a refurb model. Not only that, but my friends with Pavilion laptops complain about them a lot. They have stability issues and they are very heavy. If you want a Windows machine, get the Avartec AMD. The last thing you want is a 6lb laptop you can't carry everywhere.

Either that, or just get the cash and buy one with specs to your liking.

@Podtopia/Tholek - battery life depends on other stuff too (wireless, optical drive, and display usage), but in general a P4 laptop used like a P4 (e.g. more gaming and CPU-heavy apps) will have less battery life than a Centrino/Athlon Mobile. The P4s in laptops are designed for laptops, but the technology in general requires more power and generates more heat. It can also simply end up making the notebook unnecessarily heavy, because the processor requires extra space for heat dissipation. If you really need a desktop-replacement type of machine (e.g. don't have a desktop computer), then the P4 MIGHT be better...doesn't seem worth it to me, though.

Lunar - would you mind posting a mini-review touching on some basic aspects of this thing (screen quality, keyboard quality, portability, performance impressions)? I was going to get $1000 paypal, but after seeing your computer I am thinking about switching to the 3250. That thing looks sweet and would be great for getting around with a computer.

Lunarpancake

07-03-2005 11:22:41

Ok ill review what i can...but i havent used it much because the internet connection where im at is passworded by computer id and only one is allowed per apt. So i cant get on with my lappy AND desktop at sametime.

Anyways......

After i took the lappy out of the box and was in the process of letting it charge i carefully looked it over and noticed some neat stuff.
First thing i noticed was the actual casing of the computer. Overall everything felt sturdy and cold-metallic. Although i would not want to drop any laptop (well maybe an Apple P ) I decided that if dropped this laptop would probably fare decently. If dropped on the screen side it probably would not fare aswell as the main body side.
Second thing i noticed was that the main heat dispensing fan actually has 2 holes. One that sucks in air (bottom of laptop) and one that pushes the air out (back of laptop). As ive only had one laptop before and it was ANCIENT this was a new feature for me. And i like it.
Third thing i noticed was the keyboard size, every key is FULL SIZE with the exception of a few side keys...definatly a plus.
The third thing i noticed was the aboundance of options available for the laptop. There are 3 usb ports on the side ofthe lappy, the DVD writer, a monitor port, LAN port, modem port, headphone jack, mic jack, and volume controll, AND spare empty slot. (not sure what size the slot is tecnically speaking but its the size to fit aftermarket wireless adapters)....oh and asmall hole for a laptop-lock.

After i let it charge a few more hours i was ready to start it up and see what it could do.....
Startup went fine, and windows registration was fine..etc etc everything ship shape. (and if it wasnt they included the software to be able to reforamt anyways)
Now that ive started it up i can review on the some other stuff......

Screen when i got the laptop i was afraid of getting dead pixels.....i didint get a single one. ( i HATE dead pixels) the screen does however have a very VerY slight bluish hue to it. Not really noticable unless you read this review most likely. ( i read it from a previous review) Overall i think the screen is fine....no other laptop could be any better, unless it was a hi-def style screen.

Touchpad i hate touchpads, always have...always will. This touchpad asfar as touchpads go is fine. Like normaly touchpads you just haveta make sure your applying the correct pressure to it, and your mouse wont skip around. Given its not uber-sensitive like the ipod wheel, but its still effective and fine.

DVD Burner havent tried this yet, due to lack of blank dvd's and media on the new laptop to burn. But the software included for the Burner looks very simple and professional.

HardDrive Although this harddrive is a "slow" model of laptop HD's unless your a mega-gamer or dvd-ripping fanatic i do not think you'll notice a big loss in preformance.

Processor 2200+ when using this latop you must take into consideration that this chip is only a 1.2ghz chip. If you want the super-power-speed-money....go with the Pentium offered.

Other Misc. Buttons

Wireless ON/OFF Toggle probably one of my favorite options on this laptop. Enables you to turn on andoff the wireless built in card. So like in my case if the wireless networks around you are either weak or not trustworthy....you just simply tap the button and lipoofli your offline.

when i get around to using it more ( i will be very soon because as i wrote this review i called up my main office and they enabeled my connection for 2 pc's) i will be editing and adding to the review.

Feel free to ask any specific questions and ill do my best to answer them.

exactly.....i have a desktop already

pentium 2.4e ghz
ASUS P4c800-e AI motherboard 800mhz bus
2gig of ram
2 120gig HD's
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb vid card

This reminds me of a question I've had for a long time....

People who've had dialup may remember something called "Multilink", an option most people never used, but allowed you to use two modems in tandem to connect to the same ISP (if they supported it), and double your 56k speed.

Now I wondered if the same was possible with wi-fi, and googled about it, but all I could find were references to the channel bonding in 802.11g

What I'd love to know is if you can use 2 adapters on one PC to double the speed or not?

If so, lunar may be able to use that slot after all.... ;)

[quote1846db526e="Tholek"][quote1846db526e="shifuimam"]The P4s in laptops are designed for laptops[/quote1846db526e]

I thought that was the Pentium-M, not the P4? ?[/quote1846db526e]

There are two different lines of processors designed by Intel for laptops - the mobile Pentium 4 and the Pentium M. The Pentium M is part of what classifies a laptop as Centrino...Centrino laptops also have the 855 chipset (which is specifically designed for the Pentium M) and a B, B/G, or A/B/G Intel PRO/Wireless internal wireless card.

Pentium 4 mobile processors are rated the same as desktop processors, so most are between 2.0 and 3.0 GHz. Pentium M processors, because of the way they are engineered and how they work hand-in-hand with the specialized chipset, are rated differently. You can generally multiply the processor speed by two in order to get the effective processor speed. Because of this, most Centrino laptops are rated between 1.3 and 2.0 GHz.

I would imagine the AMD mobile processor is modeled after the Pentium M (it's just AMD's version). If this is the case, that processor can be considered to run at 2.4 GHz, not 1.2 GHz.

Centrino laptops aren't the BEST for gaming, but laptops in general shouldn't be used if you're a serious gamer. If you're looking for a gaming machine, take the $1000 and either build your own or buy yourself a high-end Dell desktop (preferably from the OptiPlex line - not the Dimensions).

The biggest problem with using a mobile Pentium 4 compared to a Pentium M is the size and heat. The P4s DO generate more heat, and they get hot more quickly. Don't get me wrong - the Pentium M gets pretty hot too. Mine usually hovers around 45deg. Celsius when I'm running processor-heavy applications (usually Photoshop and Dreamweaver)...but because it's smaller processor and designed for a laptop, it doesn't require near as much heat dissipation as a mobile Pentium 4.

You'll likely see that laptops with a P4 are heavier and thicker than those with a Pentium M. They have to be that way, to allow for the extra heat generated by the Pentium 4 (that and it's cheaper to make them like that).

Another supercool nice thing about the new Centrino 2 (Pentium M 2) chip is that it has 2MB L2 cache (for awhile, it was the only Intel processor in both the desktop and mobile lines that had that much cache!), so it will run even faster than a comparable mobile Pentium 4. I don't know that I can say the same for the AMD version of Centrino.

In general though, if you want a laptop, you should be getting either Centrino or the AMD version (I have nothing against AMD processors; I just prefer Intel myself). If this is going to be your ONLY computer and you NEED to be able to move it easily (e.g. college student going home on holidays, etc), then you can consider a mobile Pentium 4, but be aware that it will be heavier and more unweildy (usually 6-10 pounds) than a Centrino laptop (usually 4-6 pounds).

[edit]
I know it's not an option from Notebooks4Free, but...

Another thing to note is that Celeron-M processors are based off of the Pentium M but have less cache (usually 512k), while Celeron processors are based off of the Pentium 4 (and have less cache, etc).

Celerons are actually rejected Pentium 4s and Ms - if they don't run at the rated clock speed, they're labelled Celeron and sold for less[/edit]

The reviews I've read for Averatec laptops claim that they are not the best quality laptops out there... Cheap build, not sturdy, etc.

I've never used Apple before, but I think I'd rather go with a company that is known for the quality of it's products. I've gotta learn to use a Mac someday, might as well do it now.

22-05-2005 21:24:58

The Apple laptops are iBooks, not Powerbooks, so while I don't really have much against Macs, the Averatecs are a bit more powerful.

If I ever complete this, I'll probably go for an Averatec or the cash.
