which notebook would be the best one to get? Why

Tholek

I guess it would be the Athlon Averatec.

Its CPU uses less power as it was designed for laptop use, and is their equivalent to the Pentium-M. It also has a DVD-RW drive, and a larger HD.

The Pentium 4 HT wasn't made for laptops like the Pentium-M, and will supposedly drain the battery more quickly. It also has a smaller HD, and only a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive.

However, the P4HT has the Radeon 9600 card, while the Athlon has Via S3 Unichrome video.

I'd want the Radeon, but the other issues make the Athlon a better choice.

I'm no Apple freak, and I wouldn't go for the HP, as given the choice of a new model, I'll take that.

Just my opinion....

i'm getting the 14" iBook....

thats my first choice, i am planning to complete this after i get my mac mini, so i can test drive a Mac.

if i end up liking a mac, i'll get the iBook so that i can use it for college.

if not, then its time for me to just wonder which laptop i should get.

Getting the iBook to use along with my Mac Mini!!! Now, the question 14" or 12"??? One has a 1.2GHz processor while the 14" has a 1.0GHz processor. Does it matter?

Well, here's my plan...paypal takes $29.30 of the $1000. My school (and quite possibly yours, too - you'd have to go to the apple store and ask) is part of Apple's educational purchase program. You can get an iBook of the same config for $949 with the discount - which leaves you $20 to buy more RAM. )

If I wanted an Apple........which I don't. (See post above) ;)

Yeah I think I'm going to go with the 12 inch ibook. I like the portability, plus i already have a 14 inch dell 600m...i dont want anything much bigger than that.

The Averatec Athlon already has a DVD burner, and the P4 CPU might not be so good for a laptop.

i was going to get the 3 ghz averatec because its got a bigger screen, but the other one with the 80GB and dvd-rw sounds like a better laptop according to everyone else, so maybe ill get that one

That's what I'm gettin too, justinfreestuff

BTW, did OC give you credit yet? They haven't credited any of my referrals since Friday.

justinfreestuff

27-01-2005 13:12:47

nope im still waiting
says "pending credit since 1/21"

they're slow ?

i did get an extra green over the weekend though )

CollidgeGraduit

27-01-2005 15:39:19

Here's hoping they credit you (and the rest of my waiting referrals) tomorrow D

I have 6 greens, 5 that for SURE will turn green, and 40 yellows.. so 7 out of those 40 need to turn.

I'm going with the cash and buying an iBook with the educational program, so that I have a receipt from the Apple store in case something goes wrong in the first few weeks or so.

I'm at 16y and only 3 are green - some of the others should have turned by now, so I think a bunch of people signed up and decided not to do anything. )=(

Hmm, 31 yellows and no greens.

I think the law of averages says that I should at [ie129eeec75]least[/ie129eeec75] have [ie129eeec75]one[/ie129eeec75] green. ( ;)

the only main difference between the 2 appple ibooks is the screen dimensions.

PodTopia

AND the processor. One is 1.2 Ghz, while the other is 1.0.

Yeah...I'm at 16 yellows and 3 greens. I know for a fact one of my yellows will never complete and several people have mentioned they didn't complete an offer, so I've got a sinking feeling this laptop is going to take months to earn.. (

So the 12" is better on TWO counts. I wouldn't want a 14" laptop anyhow - that's part of the whole iBook/PowerBook appeal - the take-anywhere size!

16 isn't great, but I don't think I'd be as sure I'd have a green at that number. I really think that I'm not being credited properly for this or pctech4free, as both have significant yellows, and are tempting offers like the iPod.

The desktop was harder, as most who went online to see it, logically already had access to, or actually had, a PC themselves.

This really should be going better than it is.....

i actually did a c0ng4 for this one, but i'd imagine it won't help much.

I'm not going to get my hopes up on this one. (

The 12" has the Airport Extreme wireless...the 14" doesn't

That is one thing I was wondering about - all the iBooks now come with Airport Extreme, except the cheapest 12" through the educational program. I'm wondering if it comes with it, but it's not listed.

[quote316336d6bf="Anonymous"]The 12" has the Airport Extreme wireless...the 14" doesn't[/quote316336d6bf]
who is this man?
go to apple[dot]com/store and click on the iBook. the 12" comes with 1.2GHz and the 14" comes with 1.33GHz. Apple does not make a 1GHz G4 for the iBook (they did make one, the M9418LL/A, but it has been discontinued), chances are, OfferCentric rounded down so that they dont have to ship as many 14"ers.

[quote316336d6bf="apple.com/ibook"]You Can Take It with You
Built-in wireless capability on [i316336d6bf]every[/i316336d6bf] iBook G4 means you can work or play anywhere.[/quote316336d6bf]
all consumer iBooks have built-in AirPort Extreme Wireless, you cant take it out unless you are an educational institution, in which case the iBooks come stripped of the WiFi card (obviously, OfferCentric can't get their hands on those iBooks). Again, the discontinued iBook model, M9418LL/A, does not come with an AirPort extreme, but how would OfferCentric get their hands on it.

PodTopia

30-01-2005 19:21:32

I think OfferCentric really is giving the 1.0 GHz one away. Why would they list it? Someone do a customer service inquiry.

There is always a possibility they are getting them from a third-party vendor that has in stock a large quantity of the older, 1ghz, no-wireless iBooks. The Airport Extreme card was made a standard feature this last round - when the 1.2ghz 12" was released and the 1ghz was discontinued.

They could have just not updated the site, too.

I'd still recommend getting the 12" ibook, even if the specs are identical to the 14". The screen resolution, keyboard, and touchpad are the same on both, and the 12" is lighter than the 14".

...so the 12.1" averatec is the ONLY notebook offered with a dvd burner??
